March would have been nice. Aiming for the 2011-2012 sports season? Which means we're now looking at, at least, 2012-2013 for Philly Live.

New(ish) pictures!

The Broad Street façade will be really dominating! Surprisingly enough, it appears to be at a similar height as some of the shorter existing structures along that stretch.

Light Fair tradeshow coming to Phila.

Philadelphia Business Journal - by Peter Van Allen Staff Writer

New York’s loss is Philadelphia’s gain

Philadelphia convention officials signed a tradeshow that is expected to have an economic impact of $23 million early next year.

Light Fair International is expected to bring 23,000 attendees to its annual tradeshow at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on May 15-19, 2011, the Pennsylvania Convention & Visitors Bureau said. The show is expected to book 12,875 hotel-room nights.

The trade show normally alternates between Las Vegas and New York City, according to show organizers, but because of renovations at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York, it will come to Philadelphia for a year.

It will be one of the first conventions at the expanded convention center, which will open the doors of its $786 million addition early next year.

from the same report as above, this last paragraph caught my eye:

Quote:
It will be one of the first conventions at the expanded convention center, which will open the doors of its $786 million addition early next year. With the new wing, which will extend the center west by two city blocks, it will have 700,000 square feet of exhibit-hall space, up from 440,000 currently. The existing center opened in 1993.
I thought the expansion was 700,000 IN ADDITION to what was already there. Did I misunderstand?

It will bring the total up to 700,000, good enough for 14th in the country. Harrisburg's clocks in at one million sf for 9th place and the largest is Chicago's McCormick Place at 2.2 million.

Why does Harrisburg have a large convention center?

This is why. It hosts America's largest farm show every year.

Pittsburgh's is more than twice as big as the expanded PCC will be also but neither one was built right in the middle of one of America's densest cities. Our's will be bigger than the Javits Center when it's done.

Nothing on the Broad St. side this time, I don't think.

PCC Stats

from the PCC website:

The Expanded Pennsylvania Convention Center will have:
1 million sq. ft. of saleable space.
The largest contiguous exhibit space in the Northeast (541,000 sq. ft.).
The largest convention center ballroom on the East Coast (60,000 sq. ft.).
The ability to host large tradeshows or two major conventions simultaneously

so it IS 1 million sq ft then...?

Also, I thought the newly expanded convention center in Boston was now bigger. And the Javits in NYC is also undergoing expansion of its own.

I don't think the developer has obtained the needed financing for construction. If they tear down the Spectrum, expect it to remain a parking lot for years....

This has Market Square Arena 2 written all over it. I sure hope they make the right decision and save the Spectrum!

May. 13, 2010

By Stephan Salisbury
Inquirer Culture Writer

The future home of the Barnes Foundation art gallery is expected to open here in 2012.

The Barnes, which has projected an annual visitation rate of 180,000 after the first Parkway year, did commission an economic-impact study from Philadelphia-based Urban Partners.

That study estimates the facility would have an annual economic impact of $50.32 million, create 1,960 jobs during its construction and development period, and 740 permanent jobs. Additionally, it says the Barnes will generate $3.86 million in state and city taxes annually.

This is good news for Philly. This will boost tourism and add to the amenities already present in Center City.
