_________________________________________Hogle Zoo's African Savannah now open for business

_________________A new $16 million African Savanna Exhibit opened at Utah's Hogle Zoo, after a year-and-a-half-long construction project.

...After 18 months of construction, the $16 million African Savanna exhibit officially opened Monday.

"We are really excited about it," said Erica Hansen, the zoo's community relations coordinator. "It’s so neat to have some of these gorgeous viewpoints and vantage points to see these animals kind of mixing and mingling how they do in the wild."

With the new exhibit came the reopening of the Zoofari Express. The train was outfitted with an environmentally friendly engine and bigger seats to accommodate visitors, and it offers close views of the Savanna exhibit.

(Ravell Call, Deseret News)

The project was funded through a combination of public and private dollars, as well as a 2008 Salt Lake County general-obligation bond. The funding sources raised $44 million for three projects — the African Savanna, the 2012 Rocky Shores exhibit and a new animal hospital.

"I think it's important to note that from all that money we received … the multiple projects were all finished on time and on budget," Parkin said. "We are very proud of that. We feel like we are really good stewards of the county's money."...

...The new exhibit replaced what was once a duck pond and maintenance and administration office buildings.

"I think it’s a pretty good trade-off — ducks and pheasants for lions and zebras. What do you think?" Parkin said with a laugh.

New Overstock.com Headquarters

Overstock to open new Utah campus shaped like a peace sign and coliseum

Midvale » Company founder is proud of the design, says it represents “the duality of man.”

https://pbs.twimg.com

Sheena McFarland, The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57...byrne.html.csp

Overstock is on track to open an iconic building in Midvale that showcases what founder Patrick Byrne is calling "the duality of man."

From the sky, the circular building will look like a massive peace sign, while the ground view will give the impression of a Roman coliseum.

"The coliseum speaks to the fact we’re for the long term, we’re bold, we’re proud, we’re established," Byrne said. "The peace sign is a reflection of the duality of man."

The 260,000-square-foot building with a price tag between $80 million and $100 million will be in the View 72 development, on7200 South between 700 West and 1000 West in Midvale.

Byrne is excited about the location for several reasons, including amenities such as a TRAX stop located essentially at the building’s doorstep, direct access to the Jordan River Parkway and easy access to Interstate 15 and Interstate 215.

Byrne had wanted an O-shaped building to represent his company’s logo, but after Apple opened its Frisbee-shaped building, he wanted something different. As he looked at the corridors that cross from the main circle into a large, glass atrium that houses the food court, he realized he could tweak them just a bit and make a large peace sign.

"It has a super view of the Salt Lake Valley, and we think it will be key to helping us recruit the best," Byrne said. "It will be iconic, and it will be just below the right wing of 22 million people a year as they land at the Salt Lake International Airport."...

Park City Film Studios issues casting call for an operator - Raleigh Studios is one of three under consideration, developer says

Jay Hamburger, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/ci_2575484...asting-call-an

The developer of the Park City Film Studios, which will be built at Quinn's Junction, says three firms are under consideration to manage the studio. Raleigh Studios, long associated with the project, is one of the three. Courtesy of Park City Film Studios

...The studio complex will anchor what is planned as a 374,000-square-foot development. A hotel, entertainment center, international film school and digital media center are also envisioned as part of the project.

The developer recently started work at the site, located at the southwest corner of Quinn's Junction, after holding a ceremonial groundbreaking in 2013. Ericksen said the crews have begun to level the grade at the site. He said he anticipates obtaining a building permit from City Hall this week in anticipation of vertical construction starting within 30 days. The work will be visible from S.R. 248 and U.S. 40.

Ericksen said the construction this year will involve two buildings totaling approximately 100,000 square feet of space. They will house three film and television sound stages, preproduction and postproduction facilities, a digital media center and a construction shop where sets will be built.

He expects both of the buildings will be open by the end of 2014...

Fairbourne Station Update, TOD

West Valley City is already Utah’s second largest city and lies at the geographic center of a rapidly growing population that currently exceeds 1.2 million. The entire area is undergoing a renaissance of new development, a major portion of which integrates Fairbourne Station. Here, residents and visitors will live, work, shop, visit and linger in an all-new, unique, diverse and exciting urban atmosphere. At Fairbourne Station, employment, shopping and entertainment combine to create a landmark that showcases progress. Fairbourne Station is a welcoming destination to people of all ages and backgrounds.

They've also extended demolition west along 3500 South to about 3000 West; looks like they took out "The Mower Specialist" and an auto shop of some kind. They may have taken it even further west than that, but that's where I noticed it. The signage there just said something like "even more Fairbourne Station coming soon!"

Also took a pic of the park between Fairbourne Station and the WVC Library; it connects the TRAX Station, the condos and the library. I'd still like to see a new city hall, library, other civic junk developed there. I saw some signs about an upcoming festival or carnival or something, but it wasn't clear if it was going to be at this park or elsewhere.

The Newpark Town Center project is set to be near completion with the pending approval of Nevis at Newpark, a 23-unit townhome development slated to be built in between the Newpark Hotel and the Cottonwood Three building.

The proposed project consists of 29,041 square feet of residential density, according to county documents. It went before the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission for discussion and a public hearing on Tuesday and was supported under a condition of approval from County Engineer Leslie Crawford...

...The new center will be called the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater, and ground was broken to begin construction of the 2,500-seat facility....

...The theater, 131 S. Main, is expected to have its first performances in mid-2016, according to Becker. Magic Space Entertainment anticipates announcing the first shows for the theater in about six months.

The theater is being designed by Peli Clarke Pelli in collaboration with local design team HKS Architects, and Layton Construction will head construction.

"What a grand time to celebrate with the community a beautiful theater that’s going to add real life and vibrance to this city," said Alan Rindlisbacher, director of marketing for Layton Construction.

"This is another one of those great pieces to the puzzle that makes Salt Lake one of the premier cities for business. We’re excited about it."
