On another note for downtown Bathurst, 237 main st “place Levesque” has sold this week.

Also 159 main, service NB building, will see major renovations and from the look of the render, an addition on the side.

Things are looking good!

I know Irving has already started to haul in pellets from its new pellet mill by truck. Maritime Iron would definitely be a good project for the area. Lots of good jobs, activity with the port and hope give some life to our rail system.
Chaleur terminal project seems pretty quiet, I assume this isn’t going to happen.

Chaleur terminals looks belly up, several factors caused this. there was so much opposition in Quebec to block the convoys, energy east was still in talks and the price of oil was falling. Have not heard anything on this for a while.

Pur and simple opened yesterday in Edmundston.

Pita Pit is scheduled to open mid July in Bathurst so that would be any day now.

Fumoir BBQ Acadien has also opened in Nigadoo last week.

Strong rumours for a while that Is confirmed, mexiglu will be moving in the old wendy’s location on St-Peters opening in sept.

BNI reports that Maritime Iron has signed an agreement with first Nations, CEO states they are completing the last steps before being shovel ready.

Several rumours running around in the area about new coming businesses, empty space being worked in, buildings going up... Good times for the Bathurst area!

Glad to hear it. Bathurst is the natural anchor for the north shore. Hopefully if Bathurst can sustain momentum, this will help to give young people a reason to stay in the region rather than head south or to Ontario or Alberta.

We need post secondary education programs for young people to stay. We are well served on the trade side by the nbcc anb ccnb but as soon as you are looking for university, you have to move to the bigger centres and once there, most of them stay.

We only have the Université de Moncton nursing course in Bathurst.

Having more university programs would help in retention but the region has done terrific work in the past years organizing events that connects people that want to come back with employers. The number of younger families in the area can surprise some.

Fedex has built a depot in the Bathurst industrial park, the security measures are impressive around the building.

Also if Purolator build their depot back it will be at a different location, the land where the burnt down depot was is for sale.

Foundation work is ongoing for the new CRA building on Murray.

Also an excavator was seen on the site of the old mill, also some drilling rig, unsure if they just parked there of something is afoot.

Was reading yesterday that Toy’s r us is planning an expansion in smaller markets with the new toy box store concept. 2 locations would already be secured but they are keeping the locations secret at the time.

I think Toy box would do great in Bathurst, other than Walmart, the toy offering is pretty slim in the region. Also two units, one at Place Bathurst Mall and one in the Superstore Plaza would be the required size to accommodate the store.

Not saying that Bathurst is in the plans but that it would be a very nice and needed addition to the retail sector of the region. I think in the long run, Bathurst chance of landing a Toybox is pretty good.

Things in the work for Bathurst,

CRA offices is advancing, will be a 2 storey building built near the new Petro Canada at the old mill parking lot site, apparently they left the old location since it could not accommodate expansion.

Calico kids has open behind the Tim’s on St. Peters, nice little place where parents can sit down and have a coffee while kids play.

Leon’s is working hard on the old Legion building to open a new furniture store to complement the existing stores.

JC pools seems to be expanding, the building in front of the actual JC Pools is filled with spas so looks to be an expansion of his store.

Architect building downtown is also advancing, the building looks to be enclosed.

Executive Tower (yeah its odd calling a 3 storey building tower) is getting a facelift, should be starting anytime soon. It has recently been bought by Groupe Dumont, they also own the harbourview building.

Expansion to residence Le Royal is advancing rapidly, think the still have a floor to build.

Fedex has built a depot in the Industrial park, its an impressive setup.

The Bathurst airport has officially opened its new terminal, its a welcome addition, double the size of the old terminal and new amenities including runway expansion and navigation aid. Now all that is missing is an additional destination or carrier.

The gas station at the Vanier exit is Still in the works, the reserve is just waiting on the process of annexing the land to the reserve, once this is done things should happen quickly.

Some interesting things;
There is work going on in the unit next to Aubainerie, not sure what is going on if its just maintenance or something is afoot. Several people are hinting that things are coming at Place Bathurst Mall but no other info.

Also, the old Greco land downtown, that burned a few years back has been sold. Corner of King and Main. Snb website listed the sale. Not sure if it was bought to consolidate with another parcel, its an oddly shaped lot.

And all this not to mention the energy, industrial and transportation projects in the area that are in the works.

The region has gained momentum in the last 2 years and seems to be on a roll, hopefully this is just the begining!

Update on Maritime Iron, they where at the Bathurst city council providing update, they advance 3000 jobs during the 3 year construction phase and 400 full time jobs once in operation. That is over double the original estimates! EIA is being completed and soon to be sent to the province.

can’t wait to see shovels hit the ground, this will be the development that will start the wave in the region.

This will bring back people from out west, and also newcomers to the area, wonder how much this project and others will impact the next 2021 census for the region, hopefully it will at least stop the population losses.

Killer news. Good news for the city and for the north of the province as a whole.

If this goes ahead, I expect others to follow suite, Arianne phosphate comes to mind and there would be others. The port is not investing money like it is for nothing.

They recently had a large warehouse built on site, Irving will be storing and shipping out pellets that they make from the St-Leonard plant.

This could be the turning point for the region!

Some jobs postings came out for Harvey’s in Bathurst, Manager and supervisor, hopefully this is a good sign and not a “we meant Bathurst st in Toronto” kind of deal
