As always SHH great pics of what is happening on the construction scene! I have heard(?) or read(?), can't remember which, that the ALT hotel will be "assembled" using prefab modules, which probably explains why it hasn't progressed beyond the first floor at this point. I'm down that way every second day or so and keep waiting for the first "module" to arrive. Should be interesting to see what happens.
I heard from a source this week that they are actually three months behind so it will be a while before we see them. They come from Europe if I recall
Correct! They are doing the builds in Poland. The company bought plumbing pipe over here, shipped it to Poland, constructing them and shipping them back here to put the puzzle together for lack of better words.
Just noticed that they've stripped off the cladding from the old Home Hardware on Topsail Rd. Haven't seen any plans for that building, is it being demolished?
Just took a look at the St john's regular meeting agenda for January 23rd and it appears the Manga hotel project was approved. It's stated as a "154 Guestroom Hotel" located on 150 New Gower St.

Great news! On Manga's website they had it as 170 rooms, so there's been changes it appears.
Hopefully not but it is a distinct possibility considering all the objections to anything more than a few stories high. Perhaps they have changed the nature of the hotel and have opted for larger rooms or suites, thus reducing the overall number of rooms. I guess we won't know until we see some final plans, but that might not happen considering that the final approval for the JAG hotel was nothing like the original plan. It would be nice if the city provided up to date details of development proposals as they proceed through the approval stages. Oftentimes the original proposal gets changed a number of times before the final build.
Just took a look the St.John's Council Agenda for feburary 13th and saw an pretty interesting new office building proposal that is going to built on 25 Searose Avenue. The building is going to have seven floors total and be at a height of 28m. Also saw the rendering, it looks half-decent.
I'm glad to see the Star of the Sea moving along. That neighborhood needs gentrification like crazy. Now there will be mid-market condos there instead of a hole for people to throw their trash, whew!
IMHO the MIX is a good example of adaptive reuse of an older building. I would have liked the three story extension to have been a bit more glass instead of the "blah" panels and I like that they have added the new section to the west. It seems to have been a long drawn out project, no doubt due to some challenges of the older structures, but hopefully the end is in sight.
I like both as well. Not sure about MIX's window muntins tho. Maybe trying to achieve some sort of consistency? ALT makes me want to see more modern architecture in town. The lego block construction concept seems to be working well!
