I would agree. The second last photo has 138 Portage behind them. The first picture has the Westinghouse building in it (160 Portage).

Judging by the angle in the first and second photos, I'd say that this is roof of the Corona Hotel, which on Notre Dame East (now Pioneer) just east of Main St. The 3rd photo makes it look like they are on a building beside 138 Portage, but if you look to the right of the dudes sitting there, you can see the ladder from the first photo. In the first photo, it's clear that the building is actually behind the Westinghouse and Crowley buildings, therefore on Notre Dame East.

That would make the building roof visible in the lower half of the second picture the Westinghouse building and the ornate building across the street a Trust and Loan company that was located at 173 Portage Ave East. Angle wise this makes sense. The Corona was 5 stories, Westinghouse was 3 and the Trust and Loan company was 8.

Finally, in the last picture, the west side of Main St. south of Portage is visible in the background. You can see the building that says 'Furniture' on it in this picture of the Scott Block fire.

Because of the buildings that were on Notre Dame East, south Main St probably wouldn't be visible from the roof of buildings on Portage Ave East.

BTW, the relevant links to the 1914 fire atlas are here. It shows the location of buildings and their heights in stories.

the killer is that all these buildings were replaced by the Trizec Building and its underground concourse.

facinating to see south Portage in the middle of its transition from a residential neighbourhood into an area of Modernist blocks and parking lots.

I forgot that the Winnipeg Construction megathreads get archived here... pretty soon this subforum could itself become a historical resource for future researchers

The oldest one I could find:

Some of the projects mentioned in the thread wouldn't get a second look on this sub forum today. Crazy how much changes in less than 15 years!

Storage and time is what did a lot of the older Santa Clause parade floats in. There was even a story a couple years back how vandals broke into where the main Santa float was being stored and did significant damage to it. If I recall correctly there might have even been a couple of years without a local Santa Parade at all. The current parade at night with lights on trucks traces in roots back to one of the Grey Cup's we hosted. The organizing committee combined the, at the time struggling, Santa Parade with the Grey Cup parade and for some reason the trucking industry running big rigs with lights on them.

Here is the page with the history of the parade and how it evolved:

http://winnipegsantaparade.com/about/parade-history/

Looking online the vandalism that Coryb mentioned occurred in 2007 and was expected to cost $2000 to fix at the time.

I absolutely love the Watkins warehouse. Surprise surprise, the owner does not want the building designated.

Most owners do not want their property designated but it does not stop the city from designating.

Watkins is a gorgeous concrete and brick structure saved because the current owners (Richelu) had a use for it for the last 30 years much in the same way nutty club or great west metal has. We need to encourage real mfg businesses to continue using these buildings. No amount of designation helps if there is no life in a building. Remember the historically designated St Charles? The city and heritage department should focus on what is at risk today and the impact to Albert street if it's lost... It's getting dangerously close to demo by neglect and another "temporary parking lot" in its place.

Walkin Products have become popular again and can even be found in shoppers drug mart... Although an American company it still has a large distribution facility in Inkster industrial park... If some one could just convince them to move back into their original building... They are a nostalga brand even in their new packaging and marketing.
