First Tilt then Veganz?

You can't say that there isn't some strong commercial interest in this place. At least there is a (potential) silver lining to the story of this property.

I think Tilt will do very well. Their milkshakes will bring all the boys to the Yard.

Is there any update on the Dumbell? It's a shame that one couldn't have gone up at the same time as The Yard. It'll be great to see this chunk of town come to life.

According to Guerrilla Development, construction on the Dumbbell will start in May.

I'm curious about the status of Sideyard. That's gone quiet.

I took these when there was sun and it doesn't look too terrible but...

When it's cloudy it looks pretty bleak and the shiny black panels at the very top that are now being installed look pretty bad. This building needs more contrast. It would be successful if it looked like it did when it's sunny out even on dreary days.

Its odd, but could you just replace some of the black panels with color. Could look pretty interesting.

That probably would have been a better idea when they decided to change the facade of this building to go with less windows.

Agreed. Hopefully this building kills off the trend of making buildings all black.

Its just dark and depressing. Use color, or various tones of light/dark! Contrast!

90% black is the polar opposite of a glassy building.

I don't mind all black if it's done the right way in the right location. I like the Black Box building downtown on Market St. I like the Congress Center building too (well, I like the tower, but there are aspects of the base I'm not crazy about).

With The Yard, it's a case of an ultra high profile location that doesn't suit the design they chose, along with the fact that they dumbed down the design. If I worked for Skylab, I'd be embarrassed by The Yard - especially if they don't build the small building that was supposed to be next door.

Without that little building, The Yard will look significantly worse from street level. Then again, we don't know how much Skylab dumbed down the design of that building too.

Possibly the best building built in the last 10 years in Portland is black.

It can certainly be done. I just don't understand how this project got so screwed up.

It definitely shows the difference in talent and discipline among architecture firms.

It needs a nickname. Death Star? Battlestar Portlandia?

It looks like a model spaceship from film/tv. Dark colors and arbitrary placed windows and elements just to add texture.
