What's wrong with the former USAA building? I've always liked it, and (not to sound too HDRC-ey) having a mid-rise there helps to provide some balance to the three high-rises in the area.

the scale is actually pretty good.

the facade, however, is hideous. U-G-L-Y.

With the enrollment going the way its going at UIW and the growth it is experiencing, I think there are going to be some major changes on that section of Broadway-S. of Hildebrand. The problem with all those blocks S. of the Broadway is that there are a ridiculous amount of entrances and exits to Broadway, limiting the amount of sidewalks there. They should address that by encouraging the businesses to have entrances by way of "alley" and enter from the side roads. With the amount of traffic in that area, and the traffic to come, people are less likely to "gridlock" the street entrance/exit, than lets say, the exit to Jim's. It would also allow for less visible parking from the street and more storefronts on Broadway. Another issue that needs to be addressed also is the 3 tiny lanes of Broadway from Jones to about Cunningham. It should be 2 lanes and a bike lane or 2 lanes and street parking like it is on certain parts of Broadway by the Cavender lot. Three lanes might seem necessary during "rush" hour, but 10 hours of the week is not reason to have 3 lanes and have pedestrian un-friendly streets the rest of the time. A slower speed limit, 2 lanes of traffic, street parking, more store frontage and side road/alley entrances might encourage foot traffic, more retail/developments. Hopefully when the 1800 takes off, it will make the city consider all of these options; or at least when River North is complete.

Sounds like good suggestions.

I thought one the ideas running around for River North was to narrow Broadway. So they may already be considering that. Makes sense to move that a block or so North where residential development is already planned.

A new MySa NestFest blog-post has lots of great new pictures from The Broadway...

The view of downtown is pretty amazing - and leaves room for River North development to help fill in the skyline...

Not to bring up old stuff...but the skyline pic looks to be good for height comparisons. The GH penthouse is a little bit taller than the pyramids on the Marriott. The Weston looks to be as tall or a little taller than the spires on the Marriott. I vote Weston Centre for tallest building. Oh, and since the pyramids and spires aren't visible from a distance...the GH usually appears taller than the Marriott.

The lines had been repainted and there are now only 2 lanes down Broadway on the "skinny" portion.

This thing should also help discourage any new surface lots near the Witte Museum.
Now they just need to address the rest of the issues and see what they want Broadway to be; like San Pedro? or like a true extension of Downtown.

Just an FYI from today's SA BIZ JOURNAL...

A 2nd story 2bdr 2.5bth condo at 200 Patterson is on the market for $550,000...

So the prices on The Broadway seem pretty reasonable, considering that it is new construction...

I was in San Antonio last weekend and took a few shots of The Broadway. Sorry for the quality. With the gathering clouds everything looked washed out and dull.

Photos from 3/7.

I didn't have time, but I would definitely like to check out the views when I'm in town again in July.

I don't but all of the exterior of the building itself appears to be completed. (At least from 281 it does)Crane has been gone for a few months. Probably just working on the inside and the grounds around the building. I have a free day tomorrow and I'll see if I can swing by there and take some pics.

On the way home today, I'll grab some of ES. Looks like they are ready to pour the 7th floor.

The Broadway needs railing on some of the balconies, but it looks as if its mostly interior work.
