That's a really nice walk

Do you have anything to report about the Veramendi project, on the west bank of the river south of Houston Street?

Not a thing. That covered walk way that was put up for construction along the river walk seems to be the only thing that has happened on the property besides removing some windows. As soon as I see activity, I will note it here!

Restoration of this commercial building on N Zarzamora is proceeding. Besides its elegant Streamline style, this building is historic for cultural reasons. For more information on its historic value, click here http://www.savelermas.org/

VIA Metropolitan Transit is seeking proposals for redeveloping the historic Scobey complex, a roughly 270,000-square-foot site it purchased in 2017 with the aim of creating a mixed-use development near its headquarters and Centro Plaza transit center.

The historic complex at 301 North Medina St. dates back to the early 1900s. Lettering for the Scobey Fireproof Storage Co. still looms over an entrance.

After outlining several ideas and options in the master plan, VIA released a request for information and hosted site tours this spring. The responses indicate “there is a market interest to develop the Scobey with VIA,” strategic planner Brandon Thomas told the agency’s board in August.

Possibilities included residential projects “with a focus on a strong affordable housing mix” and a mixed-use development.

The timing for its transformation may be right. Cross sees remaking the Scobey as “one of the more incredible opportunities” available to developers.

“The neighborhood has absolutely made the turn, and I personally think it’s one of the next great neighborhoods in San Antonio,” he said. “I think you’re going to start seeing growth on the west side of downtown.”

I really love that whole stretch of buildings on the west side of Medina between Travis and Martin, and would hate to see any of them demolished.

It's right by the jail, though. I just don't know how you get around that. Office space? I just can't imagine that being developed into residential.

Yeah theyre really doubling down on the hope that the expansion of the UTSA Downtown campus will spur more development on the near westside. In my opinion it is going to be a difficult, uphill battle to do so because of the two chasms created by i10 and the railroad tracks

I think those two barriers are significant but they aren't stopping development east of downtown, which started slowly but has really gained momentum. Between Weston pushing downtown westward and UTSA investing hugely in their campus, I think the developer quoted in the article is right. The area between San Pedro Creek and San Marcos St. will start seeing a lot more investment.

Does anyone have an update on the Henry Terrell building renovation project? This could be another good one for downtown.

Here's a link to the HDRC agenda item. They're doing a full restoration of the exterior and elevator installation.

Renovations of the former Frost Tower are well underway.

Quote:
A joint venture between general contractors Skanska USA and F.A. Nunnelly Co. is designing and renovating the building at 100 W. Houston St. — now known as City Tower. The project is in the final stages of interior demolition, Public Works Department spokesman Paul Berry said.

The interior is scheduled for completion in February 2022, with the exterior scheduled for September 2022.

The changes due to Covid-19 include larger workstations, converting doors in high-traffic areas to automatic operation and elevator controls that enable users to call for the elevator and select buttons with their feet.

I kinda wish they were redoing the exterior to a more blue reflecting glass like the frost tower.

Different glass would be nice. That building definitely needs something.

I don't know if those horizontal bars outside the windows are part of actual structure (floor plates). If so, they should extend the floor area. If not, they should get rid of them. They're brutalist ugly and block some of the view from the inside.

Looks like they are.

Those bars would actually serve a purpose as shade structures from the sun, but that facade faces north so I don't know why they're there

Thanks, Spoiler.

So they could clearly get several thousand more square feet of usable space by moving the windows to the edge of the floor plates. They could provide better views and environmental improvements with new glass, and get rid of those ugly bars in the process.

I was once at a wedding reception on the top floor. Those bars are ugly from the inside and hinder the view. Get rid of 'em!

A little more news about the former Frost tower renovations:

Quote:
It expects to generate revenue from leasing out seven of the building’s floors to other tenants and charging for parking. The top floor is expected to be leased as a restaurant, and there will be 3,000 square feet of retail space available on the ground floor, city spokeswoman Laura Mayes said.

I allllways loved frost growing up. Keep the shades, but maybe add new shiny glass
