That's pretty ironic, the Express-News headquartered in the Light Building, with a Light sign on it, even. I still run into people who think The Light is still in production, this will further confuse them.

Meanwhile, a block away, First Baptist is demolishing the old Rodeway Inn, saying they "will consult its neighbors as to the property’s best use"

yeah, the ironies of express news moving into the old light building and a baptist church owning a seedy motel...lol.

After reading the article, I believe that the sale or long term lease of the property will allow them to stay downtown and make financial sense. I don't think their congregation is so large that they would need to expand.

There is a great article in the San Antonio Report about 3 top dollar real estate deals that promise more downtown growth!

Anyone want to post?

Here's more news about the Encore development on the north end of Broadway East. Apparently Graystreet sold this land to another developer.

https://saheron.com/broadway-east-gr...e-first-phase/

Quote:
The 386-unit complex will be constructed on about 3.4 acres of land that Encore bought from GrayStreet in July, northwest from the corner of Carson and Austin streets in Government Hill, across Broadway from the Pearl. Construction is expected to begin some time next year, company spokeswoman Amy Dunaway said in an email.

The complex will feature a courtyard, and its landscaping will make use of an historic acequia that runs through the property, said Peter French, GrayStreet’s director of development. All of its units will be market-rate, he said. It will not feature a retail component.

Glad to see this first part move forward. side note, really happy to see Richard Webner bylines at the Heron. I enjoyed his work at the Express News.

So am I correct to assume that these are the preliminary Weston Urban designs for the old Continental Hotel building?

one of the very few structures to survive urban renewal in the '60s, will also be relocated. I'm not really mad about it, obviously both structures have just been wasting away in their current locations. I hope they will be well-utilized in their new locations, wherever they might be.

The condition of those two houses has always made me so sad. Wasting away is really the phrase for it.

yeah, definitely not a fan of powerlines but I have to think the cost to bury them can make a project go in the red which is why we don't see it happen often.

I hate power lines and wish every project would bury them. But burying lines is expensive and likely would have been a budget killer for this project. And I agree this building is ugly AF, but as someone with experience designing affordable housing communities, it's one of the better ones I've seen. The stucco can always (and probably will 10 years from now) be painted, we're lucky to be seeing any brick on this building.

Low cost is understandable. This building was purposely designed to be ugly.

This is a nice little update on Broadway area stuff.

Hixon-Cavender partnership plans next phase of Broadway mini-neighborhood

https://saheron.com/soto-complete-hi...nder-broadway/

Now that Hixon-Cavender has finished construction of the Soto office building, the local partnership looks to the next phase of the mini-neighborhood it is developing on a key stretch of Broadway linking downtown and the Pearl.

Here's something from their website on future phases:
https://www.thesoto.com/future-phases.html

I think all the buildings in white are part of the Hixon-Cavender development. Though I'm sure what the actual sizes and uses are will depend heavily on how the Soto performs.
