I don't remember if the location of Bliss was determined before now, but there it is, at the end of the Glendale line.

My Question is: I remember going often to a Currie's with the giant cone signage
somewhere in the vicinity of LaBrea and San Vicente in the mid 50's,
but have never been able to find a picture or address of it. Anyone?
No date, presume 1950s or later.

When I was a teenager growing up in the San Fernando Valley I had a friend whose grand parents lived in a wood frame house directly behind Angelus Temple. They belonged to the Temple and atteneded services there on a regular basis. They were quite elderly and eventually moved into a board and care facility. Prior to renting out the house the eldest son hired an Hispanic couple to clean it up, and I was there when he issued the following instruction: "... and throw out all these tracts. They go all the way back to 1923!"

I remember the tank down the street from the Goldwyn Studios on Formosa and naturally assumed the above parking lot sequence was shot there due to convenience. Of course, various locations were used from the Arboretum to Ontario airport, so while improbable, a lot is possible. From memory, after the arrival in Boone City, there is a passing shot of a drive in restaurant advertising Tacos. Has that location been identified in this thread?

One of the shots is definitely NOT part of the Best Years. Hint, although the aircraft grave yard scenes may have been shot at or near the Ontario Airport, the Pomona Police were probably not in front of the camera.

Another interesting set of gas tanks?

I think this must be the area just south of the Mulholland bridge, beneath Lakeridge Drive, and that we are seeing construction vehicles using these dirt paths as access roads. Perhaps they were involved in grading work or construction of homes up on Lakeridge. The vertical perspective in this Google Earth shot doesn't quite match the original, but I believe it's the same area.

www.google.com
Smart call! After discounting several theories, including escaped simians and Rod Serling portals, the construction equipment makes sense, particularly when viewed next to another "presumably" contemporaneous picture that has a red bodied cement truck with a white or light colored mixer. See far right of picture at 3 O'clock. (On the opposite hillside, there appears to be two larger red vehicles, suggesting the possibility that red was the favored color of the on-scene construction company.)

Decades before it was a bakery it was...

... a flower shop owned by Judy Garland!

LAPL

A source says:

"In the late 30s/early 40s, Judy Garland opened a flower shop at 5421 Wilshire Blvd. This was around the time she was filming “The Wizard of Oz” and her mother thought it might be a good idea to invest her money in something more sensible and practical and non-show-biz related. There are photos of Judy “working” in the store but with her super-busy MGM schedule, it’s likely that these were nothing more than photo opportunities."

Interesting. Thank you for the information.

"from The Seattle Sunday Times Rotogravure, January 22, 1939"
"LATEST AND YOUNGEST of Hollywood screen stars to go into business as a sideline is 15-year-old Judy Garland, who is seen (right) in the sales room of the smart flower shop she has opened on a Los Angeles boulevard under the firm name "Judy Garland Flowers, Inc." Profits, if any, from the venture will go into a special trust fund for Judy that she cannot touch until she is of age."

Still exploring the Wilshire May Co "gas station" connection. Noticed for the first time that the Coffee shop at 6101 Wilshire that seemed always to be known as "Johnies," also went by the name of "Ram's Coffee Shop." WE6-5219 for a window table?

OK, it's midcentury modern instead of noir, but still might be fun to find.

From "Burke's Law," 1964. The Rolls pulled up here after making a left turn in front of a dine and dance place called "Vagabond's House."

Cheers,

Earl

I wasn't able to find the Vagabond's House location (perhaps it was a fictitious name tacked on an existing nightclub),

....but thanks anyway for this 'mini-mystery', and welcome to the thread Earl.

We visited the long lost 'Kiddieland' several times on this thread. I recently I found these two 1970s snapshots on ebay.

below: The seller obviously noticed what I noticed....the extremely agitated looking man (that's a nice way of putting it).

http://www.ebay.com/

In all honesty, this guy scares the 'bejesus' out of me.

Below is a brief video of 'Kiddieland' located at Beverly Blvd. & La Cienega....now the site of the Beverly Center.

Thanks for trying. Here's a couple of screenshots of the place (I still haven't' figured out how to get the pictures to show in the post):

http://www.usvmyg.org/images/VagabondHouse.jpg

http://www.usvmyg.org/images/Sign.jpg

The sign reads (I think) "Dance Lessons Val Demo's [or Demos or Demas] Studio"

The building looks pretty distinctive.

This stuff is fun :-)

Cheers,

Earl

Earl, your two links require a user name and password to view the photo.

Perhaps we can help you post photos to the thread.

Yes..the two links work now Earl. Thanks

That building looks very recognizable....I am sure someone here will be able to place it.
I feel like it's on the tip of my tongue.

It seemed familiar to me, too. I had a hunch the building was somewhere on Wilshire. Apparently it was, and in fact still is...

http://ebay.com

"...My father, Joe Chastek, first was introduced to Polynesia when he and a high school buddy stowed away to the Philippines when they were both 17. After that, he became so immersed in the culture that it literally became his whole life until he died in 1995. He was one of the first to open a nightclub with the South Seas motif. His first was the Zamboanga, where he entertained movie stars and sports celebrities. The Zamboanga was featured on the TV Biography series that discussed early 1940's South Seas nightclubs in Los Angeles. His second nightclub was the Tradewinds. His third, the Vagabond's House was on Wilshire Blvd in LA, and was incredibly popular with, again, movie stars and sports celebrities.

I have been communicating with a man who is writing a book about Don Blanding, who wrote the original poem, "Vagabond House". He and my father were acquaintances, and I am fortunate enough to have some of their correspondence and a picture of Don. My son has posted a few pictures from the Zamboanga, which I was pleased to see. One of Joe's close friends at that nightclub was Johnny Weismuller. I have a very early picture of the two of them, and then have a later one taken at the Vagabond's House years later."
