Ok so Montreal looks like a NA urbanist's wet dream. So walkable, dense, and love the row house architecture. Great thread.

Canadians, don't get mad at me for this question, but is Montreal a solidly middle class/lower middle class city? While it looks clean, it doesn't scream glam or wealth being Canada's second city. It looks pretty gritty and of a certain time (meaning, outside of the really old buildings, it's giving 1970s/early 1980s boom). It doesn't appear as though a ton of mega corporations or affluence is concentrated there, the way a second city in the US would (Chicago, LA, etc.).

Think of Montreal as a close relative to Philly, Brooklyn, Baltimore and other US east coast cities in terms of urban aesthetics. Middle class/working class townhouse neighbourhoods and swankier townhouses and mansions in adjacent richer neighbourhoods. Until the 2000's, Montreal was a city that had experienced a series of political and economical declines and as such has kept a certain grittiness to this day.

The snow vanished in late February oddly enough, but there are still tall buildings left in this city...

So much to love about Montreal. The terrain outside of the urban area creating nice views for an eastern North American major city as well in the city and urban proper with the unique city landscape. The deep history and preservation along with strong economic growth keeping the city at the cutting edge.

There’s also the French culture which is cool in itself yet easy enough for an American who only knows how to curse and or order a drink in certain languages. Definitely been meaning to take a trip, maybe when the new rail line is completed at the US - Canadian border that would be the way to go.

Thanks for continuing this thread even though the snow has departed. It's nice to see Montreal's skyscrapers and other buildings regardless of the season
