I've not heard anything since January 2014 when the Design Review Committee approved the plan and the developer said he hoped to start construction in March 2014.
Your pictures of on going construction downtown are awesome, thank you.

I passed the site of the proposed Homewood Suites 5 points S. and there seems to be some preparation for demolition, a large yellow piece of equipment is parked in the back of the building along with 2 refuse dumpsters, and several pickup trucks and the back door is wide open.

Also, I was told by a Birmingham bus driver that there is construction activity going on at the Empire building on 1st Avenue and 20th Street North, possibly being renovated for an Autograph Hotel by Marriott.

I went downtown Sunday and saw for myself that there is demolition going on in the Empire Building, there's brown paper up on the windows with tears to allowed me to look in the building, two large dumpsters out front and a few windows on the upper floors are open.
Retail Specialists plans to develop a $13.6 million mixed-use project that will include retail and apartments in Birmingham's Southside.
The company announced plans in a release this week that details three floors of residential and ground floor retail space in the former Waite's Bakery building at the corner of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard and Seventh Avenue South.
The four-story building will feature 30 one-bedroom units and 15 two-bedroom units on the three levels above the first floor.
The project, which will include 15,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, will be called Central City, the release said.
I was thinking the same thing. Also, odd location. In the articles, the developers say "...the new Publix several blocks away...". SEVERAL?! Do they really expect Alabamians to take a bus, or walk, to the grocery store from THAT location?
I dunno, yay for development, but a bad location. That land would be better used for expansion of the UAB medical campus.
