BBC NEWS BUSINESS

Quote:
Berlin is the home of choice for many new hi-tech entrepreneurs from around the world.
Quote:
Berlin has always been fashionable, edgy, artistic and in search of a role for itself. Sliced in two by communism and then re-united when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, it is now re-inventing itself as one of Europe's leading hi-tech hubs. Cheap property plus a young, talented workforce are attracting entrepreneurs from all over Europe and even the US.
Quote:
"Berlin is a fantastic city. It's an old city, it's culturally and historically really rich, but it's also very young," says David Noel, head of community at SoundCloud, an audio sharing website.
Quote:
Berlin became one of coolest places in the world to live and that attracted an entirely different crowd, creative people, people who were willing to try something new and most of these people were also from other countries,"” - Ciaran O'Leary Earlybird Venture Capital
GlobalBiz: Start Up City: 17 Nov 12 - BBC Podcast (27 min.)

Quote:
Every city wants to become a high technology business hub, but ambitious entrepreneurs from all over Europe are rushing to set up shop in Berlin.

Beautiful pictures of Berlin in this thread. It's great to see that there are additions to the skyline of Berlin forthcoming.

Berlin's 'poor but sexy' appeal turning city into European Silicon Valley - The Guardian
Rupert Neate in Berlin, Friday 3 January 2014 18.40 GMT

Quote:
A decade ago Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit tried to attract creative types to the city by declaring "Berlin ist arm, aber sexy" (poor but sexy).

It worked. The City's astonishingly low rents compared with other European capitals – a one-bed flat a short walk from Alexanderplatz in the centre of town can still be picked up for as little as €450-a-month (£373) – have helped draw arty people from across the world and made Berlin a major centre for artists, writers, musicians and, increasingly, technology and web entrepreneurs.
Happy New Year !

For example if you live in Prenzlauer Berg, which is in the Bezirk Pankow, do you have to go to the central Bezirksamt Pankow or is there a local office in Prenzlauer Berg?

If you live in that neighborhood, where do you go to:
- renew your ID card?
- renew your passport?
- declare a birth or death?
- get your voting papers?
- get your driving license?
Depends.

In general: There are around 40 offices (Bürgerämter) in the city spread evenly over all 12 boroughs (Bezirke) dealing with most of the services you are asking for (renew your ID card, passport, documents etc.). Voting papers are always send to your address of residence (as a German). All things concerning driving licenses or car registration are dealt with in 2 major offices (KFZ-Zulassungsstelle). All business and tax relevant issues are dealt with in offices called "Finanzamt", one in all of the 12 boroughs is guaranteed.

Germany has some of the most liberal sex worker laws on the globe.

The Berlin sex workers have adjusted to the inner city pretty well.....
