Expansion is absolutely needed. A flyover couldn't hurt either. When I left Austin recently I experienced the same back-ups that you other guys were talking about. A lot different from only a few years ago when I lived in Austin.

I believe the port wanted to construct flyovers but the city council shot down the proposal. Hopefully it will happen in the next 5-10 years.
I see, I figured some of the backup had to do with the construction going on. Was it this council that shot down the proposal or the last?

I'd much rather see another airline (AA, UA or DL) step up...thus, possibly increasing our chances for overseas direct flights. WN will give us nothing. WN is really pushing their international "terminal" (more like a four-gate wing) at HOU with flights all over the Caribbean and Colombia.

DL lost it's base in Dallas (rather DL killed it)...so if Austin is going to secure any chance of a small hub, it would be with DL (since AA and UA's largest hubs are at DFW and IAH, respectively...less than 200 miles from AUS). However, that is not likely to happen.

In 2014: other than WN (yielded a 37.3% market share - up 2.5% from 2013), AA had a 18% market share (Y-O-Y=+4%); UA had 16.6% (Y-O-Y=+17%); and DL had 12.4% market share (Y-O-Y=+10.5%).

I think Air Namibia's code is SW and they've been around longer I think. As for why WN? I could speculate and that speculation would be "It had a W in it and wasn't currently used"

Looks like Condor will be starting up Frankfurt-Austin, nonstop, in June 2016. Good for AUS!

Here's the press-release

I had a feeling it was going to be Condor and not Lufthansa after Condor started their direct nonstop to Providence.

Here's the master plan that shows the proposed 2-lane flyover that would connect with Westbound 71: http://austintexas.gov/sites/default...Chp7_Part3.pdf

It appears they were hoping to build it sooner rather than later due to the forecasted growth. The document also shows where a potential LRT might connect to the terminal.

Anyone know how the eastern concourse expansion is coming along? I guess it's still in design phase, but with three new international airlines with as many routes in as many years, I'm getting a little nervous about the timeline.

The Statesman has a relatively long article about the Frankfurt flight (if you can get past the pay wall):

Not only do I wish Lufthansa had chosen this route, but, I also wish this was not a 2x/wk seasonal flight.

However, no real complaints from me. This news is far better than no news, right?!? I am excited to see the Condor B763ER next to the BA B772ER next summer!

Maybe by that time, JAL (or ANA) would have made an announcement...daily N/S flights from AUS to NRT. Hey, I can dream...

Honestly, I was afraid another flight to Europe would bring down passenger numbers for the BA flight, until I realized it was seasonal twice-weekly. I think such a route can survive, as much as a seasonal Hawaiian route would fare well here as well.
