So what's the story with this? Been pretty quiet in this thread lately. Is it still on schedule for December? Shame it can't be open by the anniversary. It seems like externally it's mostly finished, so now it's just the guts? Any actual construction updates?

This coming 9/11, so two days from now, the oculus will retract. Being part of the symbolic nature of it. I believe something like two hours or close to it.

I think its still on track for a December opening. Parts of the station with that beautiful white marvel have been open for a while. The concourse is great.

Article from the NYT on St. Nicholas National Shrine:

Church, Rising at Trade Center Site, Will Glow Where Darkness Fell
New York Times
September 9, 2015
David W. Dunlap

Source

Quote:
On Aug. 28, the first concrete was poured. This week, the formwork is in place for the base of the drum-shaped sanctuary. Construction is expected to take two years.

The $35 million domed structure to the south of the memorial will glow at night through a veneer of white Pentelic marble, from the same vein in Greece that was quarried to construct the Parthenon.

...

Fulfilling the requirement of modernity, the principal facade of St. Nicholas, a drum supporting its 48 ½-foot-diameter dome, will glow softly from within after dark. The concrete load-bearing walls will be sheathed in a curtain wall of glass panels sandwiching slices of marble so thin — two or three millimeters — that they will be translucent, illuminated by LEDs in the cavity between the concrete and curtain walls.

Because the glass surface will be nonreflective, it will appear in the daytime that the church is sheathed in solid stone, Mr. Dimitriou said, as he led a reporter and a photographer through the concrete outline of St. Nicholas.

I'm looking at this and thinking "hmmm.... is that the finalized finish quality on the rafters? Hope not..."

Years of work - years - with all those bucket cranes and fitting, welding, polishing, filling gaps, primer coat, overcoat, coat again, touch up, etc etc etc and it still looks like that? Not blaming contractors, I think there was something in this design, maybe the joints of the rafter pieces, that has made it incredibly difficult to get a good finish.

What does the future hold too considering the NYC weather and the corrosion setting in? I'm thinking about Calatrava projects in Spain and that is a much more mild climate than the US northeast. On the other hand, I've seen his museum in Milwaukee and that seems to be holding up fine, don't know about the maintenance cost though.

Those scratches look like they were made by the cherry pickers, I really hope there's still a glossy final paint that will be applied. There are still small crevices that seem unpainted leading me to believe there's still a final layer that will be applied. I hope so, otherwise the paint job was done without any care at all.

^Be real guys, look closely across the whole thing, theres beige paint, gray paint, dots and speckles everywhere. Most importantly they have yet to install the (aluminum?) panels between the rafters and next to the skylight, and between the side glass and the exterior ribs. This thing has a ways to go before final paint.

The other side of that wall will open up to the main PATH transit hall once construction is complete. The old temporary platforms have been removed and the new permanent platforms are going in now. Once that's done the walls will come down.

The mall will mostly be north of the PATH transit hall, in the basements of Towers 3 and 4. Here's a previously posted schematic with my crude drawing of what's open right now:

I realized the connection to 1 WTC / Brookfield place is on the wrong side of where I labeled the turnstiles but you get the idea.

It will. There will be a passageway linking Fulton Station to the WTC Hub. In fact, it will be possible to walk all the way from Brookfield Place to Fulton Station without having to go outdoors and/or above ground. Great for commuting in the winter!

In the map above, you can see some truncated text to the right of the Oculus. That's where the passageway connects.
