I don't recall ever being asked to take off my shoes in India, South Africa, or anywhere in Latin America (apart from anything else, ceramic/stone floors can be cold ... ).

Source is questionable, and a lot of this is debatable (many of these countries are probably mixed and/or regionally varied moreso than being purely one versus the other), but for what it's worth here's a world map of whether shoes are removed inside or not. Green are the good guys, blue the wierdos:

Not sure about the rest of the map but I know for a fact Thailand is definitely not a shoes on country (at least where I went). I was told it's extremely disprectful to leave shoes on when entering someones home and even when we went to go look at a hostel that was partially under construction we followed the hosts lead and took the shoes off going through unfinished floors and whatnot.

Uh, that map is crazy. Everywhere in east and southeast Asia is shoes-off outside of maybe the most remote tribes. And Mongolia.

And does the Netherlands really differ from Germany in this? I'm skeptical.

This could be SSPs final contribution to society as the site slowly withers away.

A Michelin-style guide on countries where shoes are to be removed. Specific to sub-regions and cultural groups within every country .

I can't believe this is a thread and that I'm commenting again on it. If I lived in Australia or few of those other blue places I might keep my shoes on as well.

Im somewhere in the middle .

Im fine with shoes in the front hallway, tile floors but prefer guests have shoes off on hardwood and never allow shoes in the bedroom.

I always have socks on though, even when i sleep.

this is a weird thing ive thought about a bit as an american, and i think its all over the map, here.

in some cases its simply a question of formality, taking your shoes off is overly casual for the setting or tastes (?) to the point of being seen as uncouth. there *is* a pretty hardcore “take your shoes off!!!!!!!” subculture as well. you really don’t know what to expect in america with this.

flooring types also come into play...some people have cold tile flooring throughout the entire house, and hardwood can be slippery. hard flooring seems to be dominant mode these days. i have concrete flooring underlaying laminate and ceramic tile which can make my floors particularly cold and hard. you see a lot of polished concrete floors these days which arent really sock-feet friendly. you kind of have to leave your shoes on or go full barefoot (same with ceramic tile sometimes) which circles back to the level of formality and/or seasonality/climate. concrete floors feel a lot better on your feet when its hot.

Greenland is a "shoes on" country? I think the main reason Canadians take their shoes off is because for much of the year, they're covered in snow, salt and mud.

I was at a dinner party at a house over the weekend where people were quite nicely dressed, and it reminded me that people who are dressed up look really dorky walking around in sock feet. That's probably a big reason why some prefer to wear shoes inside.

A lot of Scandinavian guys are doing the "suit, dress shoes, no socks" thing and it makes the taking off of shoes a bit weird, what with the bare feet and all.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I find this style trend perplexing... dress shoes aren't meant to be worn without socks. But if you're doing it, yeah, you are pretty well committed to keeping your shoes on no matter what... a suit with totally bare feet would look asinine.

So a Neo Miami Vice thing of sorts?

It's the general trend right now not just in Scandinavia - a friend of mine was modeling a suit yesterday and it came sans socks. Another look is casual wear with a short pant to show off socks.

Shoes sans socks is a great way to make your feet and shoes stink, too.

Most suits nowadays are tailored to show some sock, and that is reaching over into the casual slacks and even jeans as well. You wouldn't see many people under 40 in Downtown Toronto with suit pants reaching the shoe.

The no sock thing is definitely more prevalent now. I'm not a fan, especially since it's often used with the suit/sneaker combo.

Who would have thought back then that the Pee Wee Herman look would one day be in?
