Damn, the new bridge (near the roundhouse campground on the south side of the highway) going east is open and is it ever high! The view from the top is pretty good.

Yup has been open for a few weeks now. The view is good! However the view won't be good going west for much longer as they reopen the westbound lanes and make that bridge east bound only.

Enjoy it while you can!

You conveniently omitted the second part of your question.

Is the Balgonie Overpass open? I wonder how the people are handling the round-a-bouts

Well the roundabouts are very intuitive (as one would expect) and are not like the "traffic circle" in Saskatoon of old. 30km/h speed limit and gentle curves guide you where you need to go.

Also of note is the west side overpasses are getting some girders today at Dewdney and Rotary Avenues

Did you compete with a semi yet on the roundabouts? I am sure that should not be a big deal either, although might be a bit intimidating for first timers.

I am really excited about the diverging diamond. Which one will that be? PB? I think it is pure, simple genius and hope it van be applied to some Ring Road interchanges.

When I was parked at the Flying J watching several trucks left the parking lot did the overpass and returned they didn't appear to have any issues and one was a turnpike double. I think truckers are the lease of the worry, as they have likely had experience with these intersections in many jurisdictions across North America.

I am also looking forward to the diverging diamond. And it could be done at a majority of existing and new interchanges built on ring road!

I wouldn't call it a waste of money. If the approaches need to be widened 20 inches on either side then do it. Also the curbs could be rounded to eliminate the scrapping issue the farmer and truckers are raising.

It just seems that people love to bitch.

So there will be at least 3 new sets of lights on Vic east between the bypass interchange and Prince of Wales. I am not sure how much better the commute to the eastern suburbs is going to be once the Bypass is complete. There will still be semis on this section for local traffic and through traffic to Highway 11 and Highway 6 N.

There was never any chance of improved commutes.

This has always been about the GTH. Everything else is political noise

I suppose many semis, especially B-trains going from Highway 11 to Highway 1 E. and vice versa will choose to take the Bypass all the way around the City. No stops at 110KPH.

I don't think the bypass will be any quicker getting to 11 unless it's literally at rush hour.

It may not be any quicker but not having to gear down to stop, then slowly gear up to speed a 4 or 5 times until you get to Albert would be easier on the drive train, brakes and fuel economy.

Correct, with big trucks you go through 4 gears in low before you really get to accelerate. Depending on your load. So having to do this potentially up to 8 times (lights alone) after lights for Costco and tower road are erected. Not to mention the potential for a train on the ring road.

Staying at 110 km/h is preferred wherever possible. My uncle who is a trucker said he would take the bypass around to 11 rather than go the shorter route with more stops.

He said he also took the Henday around south Edmonton and avoided 16 before North Henday was completed. Stops = time and money and fuel burn. Fuel burn is significant less even with the further distance.

Using the google machine the distances are measured to same start and end points east and north of the city.

Bypass = 45km
City Route = 22km

@100km/h bypass takes 27 minutes
@50 km/h (Average Speed through city assumed) = 26 minutes

The city presents more uncertain driving conditions. Cross traffic lights and trains.
Bypass with all rail grade separated and only two seldom used cross roads.

So yes there isn't much difference. But the Bypass is easier to drive and a lot less stressful.
