30th Street Station District Plan to reveal 3 bold diagrams for capping rail yards; seeks public feedback

Monday, June 15, 2015 By Jim Saksa

On Wednesday, the 17-member organization team led by Amtrak, Brandywine Realty Trust, Drexel University, PennDOT and SEPTA that is developing a comprehensive plan for the 30th Street Station District will unveil three diagrams to the public presenting differing ideas and concepts for the long-dreamt about area surrounding the train station.

PlanPhilly got a chance to preview the diagrams last week with Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz and Natalie Shieh, Project Director for the 30th Street Station District Plan. Along with representatives from the rest of the team, Amtrak will host an open house at 30th Street Station Wednesday June 17, from 4:00 P.M to 7:00 P.M., and is looking for lots of public feedback.

Papal gridlock means bring your walking shoes [map]

By Tom MacDonald

"Only 31 of our systemwide 280 rail stations will be open for service," Casey said. "This will allow us to speed up service, recycle the trains to increase our system capacity." (See list of stations below).

Casey says special regional rail passes costing $10 per day will be sold in limited quantities beginning July 15. Each pass will only be valid for specific stations.

The Market Frankford El will only have two stops operating on each end. The Frankford Transportation Center, and Girard Avenue from the Northeast, and 69th and 52nd street from the west. They also have a special $10, three-day pass but tokens and transpasses can also be used on subways, trolleys and buses.

SEPTA has lost its marbles , they should ask for neighboring agencies to provide extra rolling stock and run higher frequencies...

Yea, just read about that. The idea to shut down all but a handful of train stations is short sighted and that's putting it diplomatically. It's going to create massive choke points in and around these stations. Of course, if you live within walking distance of one of these, you can make a lot of money but for everyone else, this is going to be a major headache.

Even more foolish to remove most transfers along their system and have none for the PATCO line. This is going to cause more traffic than save. Anyone know how buses are being affected?

Public transit changes you can expect during the papal visit

By Alex Young | For NJ.com
on June 16, 2015 at 2:30 PM, updated June 16, 2015 at 2:31 PM

NJ Transit

• Regular weekend service on the Atlantic City Rail Line and River Line will not operate during the pall visit on Sept. 26 and 27.

• NJ Transit will offer special tickets that go one sale later this summer for the different service options that will be available. The tickets will have to be purchased before boarding.

PATCO

• During the papal visit, express trains will provide non-stop service between the Lindenwold, Woodcrest, Ferry Avenue, and Camden Broadway stations in New Jersey and the 9th/10th & Locust Streets station in Center City. There will be no service at any other station.

• Special fares will be in effect for Sept. 26 and 27. A day pass will be $5, and a two-day pass will be $10. Customers with Freedom cards will be able to pay $2.50 for a one-way single ride.

• Three of the New Jersey PATCO stations have parking — 3,300 spots at Lindenwold, 1,900 at Ferry Avenue and 2,700 at Woodcrest. However, officials warned that passengers should expect the parking spots to fill quickly.

I think it's probably necessary. For example, there is no point in the El making all its stops if the cars are full and can't take passengers before it even gets to Girard. Then you'll be stuck with stations throughout the system full of passengers that can't board - now that would be a major headache.

That's just the el, though, and the el is, er, unique equipment. This is true for the trolleys -- unique track gauge -- and (to a lesser extent: it might fit the New York subway's A division (IRT) trains) the NHSL as well.

As far as Regional Rail goes there really is no reason why SEPTA can't just borrow some Arrow IIIs for the duration (and possibly some M9s too). The BSL has the same loading gauge as the New York subway's B division (BMT/IND), but I would imagine moving that equipment would be much more of a headache than the mainline stuff.

M9s haven't been built yet , we have hundreds of arrows awaiting scrap...but SEPTA has rejected them...

Roosevelt Boulevard Subway

Just encountered this article from May, don't think it was posted before. It basically says that they are looking at re-doing the entire Boulevard as it doesn't work for anyone: cars, pedestrians, transit, bikes, etc. Everyone hates it, so it's time to redo the whole thing. If they do, it could include the subway line. Nothing imminent, but they are studying it.

Great article!

For those spending hours in traffic, it’s no surprise the region has one of the nation’s worst commutes. Fixes aren’t cheap.

Anyone who says that only having a limited number of regional rail stations operational for Popenado obviously doesn't remember the clusterfuck that was the Phillies parade. There were hundreds of people at every station and the already packed full trains had to crawl through at a snail's pace.

Having timed tickets for specific stations is a great start to trying to do better this time.

Yes I remember the World Series clusterfuck. But SEPTA's plan won't address the main issue - capacity. It should really beg/borrow/steal buses to augment the train lines and make runs from an additional subset of stations. Example: have a few buses at Spring Mill station (large parking lot) that will go directly to the "drop off" point in CC. Copy this on some additional train stations. And why in the world are those drop off points every station BUT the one closest to the Parkway!? Ugh..

On the whole, this won't turn out very well. None of it. At first, it seemed like a boon for the city. But between this awful transit plan and the draconian security measures (a fence around CC, museum closures, massive street closures, etc.), it's not looking good. The city will be held hostage, local residents and businesses are being massively inconvenienced, visitors will have a tough time dealing with all this crap, and the city will end up with a huge black eye.

Adding a convoy of busses is a great idea. I'm just saying that borrowing a bunch of railcars and making stops at all stations is completely impractical.

I agree that at the end of the day, this will be a total mess and make the city look bad.

I'm surprised that you are surprised. This gathering provides too soft of a target for the feds, anti - terror, state, local authorities not to get involved with security. Im catholic and am getting out of dodge for the weekend as are many of my friends and relatives. People will be sheparded thru safety corridors from hotels or transit drop off points to the events and then back. Hopefully the city can get thru this without incident or a black eye.

The ripple effect that is occurring is effecting companies located in the 'burbs too and I am starting to wonder if there won't be an over preparation and thus reducing some of the headache immensely (not a bad thing at all, just pointing out that this might not go as badly as some may think).

I am giving the same advice that I would during a major weather event just to be safe: if you are not attending and don't absolutely have to be out, don't be.
