Half Moon Motel

The Half Moon Motel, Sepulveda and Piggott Dr, Culver City:

culvercity.patch.com

My kids must have asked me a million times why it says "Half Moon" but has an image of a crescent moon.

It has an exceedingly knarly old yucca on the corner with a really thick trunk:

There's a couple of more angled vertical signs across the street:

Allied Model Trains

Allied Model Trains was on Pico near Westwood Blvd since 1946. In the 90s they built a nifty building in Culver City on Sepulveda at Barman. It was really surprisingly well done and I, for one, appreciated the landscaping. Now it's Samy's Camera where the clocks don't even run on time.

Some difficulty or other caused Allied to move across Barman to a smaller, older, but still nice, building:

In answer to Ethereal_Reality regarding his post on the small structure and channel in Elysian Park on page 606. This appears to be a part of the old Buena Vista Reservoir in Elysian Park. The pipe may be one of the early wooden pipes, terminating at a flow control gate emptying into an open water channel.

Part of this channel may be seen on Google Maps satellite view of Elysian Reservoir. Locate the parked white pickup and trailer at the midpoint of the reservoir and follow along the edge towards Grand View Avenue. The channel comes into view at the corner of the reservoir.

See: http://waterandpower.org/museum/Wate...s_Angeles.html

Additional research reveals that I may be wrong about the channel connecting to the reservoir. The picture is explained here:http://lashp.remap.ucla.edu/visual/m...g2_itemId=3082

Cheers, Jack

What exactly are we looking at here? I can't figure it out.

A slightly below-grade rr track?...an abandoned canal? What is that just below the small building...a large corrugated pipe?

This is the Los Angeles Water Co ditch close to the intersection of Stadium Way and I-5. The ditch was ~30-40 ft above the fields below and most likely survives today.

Interesting. Thanks for your procab and Wig-Wag. I've been wondering about that photo for quite awhile.

I was surprised the photograph is dated 1899 (I thought later) and that it's a Zanja (cool).
So what I thought might be rr tracks is what...just planking?

I appreciate all the information on the "Second Hill Street Tunnel and looks like it may have been longer than any of the other tunnels. ?
If there are any photos of the entrances up close I would love to see them also!

We used to eat lunch at that Italian restaurant when I worked for Lorimar. I had forgotten about it until I saw your photograph.

I've searched the thread several times, and this is the only time the Avodon Ballroom is mentioned. I don't know how we missed it.

What led to my search was this matchbook I found earlier this week.

I wonder if that is Mickey Cohen's big black Caddy parked outside the Avadon Ballroom?

OK, I'm gonna put this all together... including a picture that I thought had been posted here earlier, but I was unable to find it in the thread!

First we have a photo that MichaelRyerson hosted and posted on page 605. It's 1945 and we're looking north, standing near the top of the stairs above the Hill St. double tunnel (trains on the left, cars on the right). A northbound train is about to pick up some riders, and then it will cross Temple St. and bear left into the unpaved approach to tunnel #2.

Next we have a couple of photos from a page at uncanny.net.

Now it's 1946 and we have walked down the stairs toward Temple Street. At extreme right, a red Pacific Electric train sits at the same spot as the one in the first photo, while a yellow & green LA Railway train turns toward us from eastbound Temple. Across Temple Street, a second PE train appears to be sitting in a siding that lays to the right of the tracks leading into tunnel #2. Marked at far left is the right edge of the concrete entrance to tunnel #2; the tunnel itself is blocked from view by that pesky foreground building.

http://www.uncanny.net/~wetzel/bunkerhill.htm

We continue walking towards Temple Street and then across it, finally allowing us a good view of the approach and south portal of tunnel #2 (while also stepping back in time a decade or two):

http://www.uncanny.net/~wetzel/bunkerhill.htm

Unfortunately, I was not able to find a good picture of the north portal. I shall have to make due with this wide shot looking west, posted by kznyc2k (also on page 605). We've come back to 1947, and the Hill St. double tunnel is visible at far left above the huge federal building, while the north portal of the Broadway tunnel is easy to make out towards the lower right.
But tunnel #2 is what we're looking for and I have marked it - what I think may be the disturbed earth around the cut for the south portal is just barely visible on the left, but the protruding concrete and shadow of the north portal is a little easier to make out on the right:

Ta da!

Just went through my files again and found another shot sort of showing the tunnels in 1950. Note the lines drawn on depicting where the freeway would soon be slicing through.

Still can't find any pics of the northernmost portal!

And here's another batch of LA Noire pics, this time with a focus on some of our favorite Bunker Hill locations:

View down Third from the stairs leading up to Olive

Now at Fourth and Olive and the Fremont Hotel's steps

Looking up Fourth towards Grand

Looking down Olive towards the Trenton, Biltmore, Pershing...

Last for now, a shot from the parking lot behind the Fremont looking towards the PE Subway Terminal Building and Title Guarantee

What a great thread!! I started reading it at 10 pages per day, and got to the current pages about a month ago. I've never been to LA though.

(the sign atop the building at left says 'figueroa building')
So is this location correct?
___

I didn't have my trusty 1947 map when I asked the above question several years ago so here goes...

It turns out there was a 7th Place near Figueroa.

This makes the Beck Hotel (green circle) almost next door neighbors to the Westmoore Hotel (blue circle) at 7th street and Flower.

The Westmoore one last time.

Today 7th Place today is further east by the river (not there on the 1947 map).

And, of course, it's E Olympic at the corner of "notorious" Ceres Ave:

That was a really sad story e_r, but a fun-looking ballroom. The building, judging by the brickwork on the side, looks to be quite old. Was it something else before?
