^ Agree - it's disgusting whenever we lose our history for ... Gene Kaufman. And this is one tall-ass Kaufman turd. New York City is that man's toilet (wish he'd been born in Abu Dhabi).

The city needs to find a way to regulate this depressing crap. Maybe it's zoning (eliminating the setbacks nonsense that encourages the Changs and Kaufmans of the world to vomit up this sort of garbage). Maybe it's just throwing Gene Kaufman into Rikers Island ... have any architectural critics done any investigative reporting into that man's taxes?

140 West 28th Street Crosses Halfway Mark Above Chelsea

Quote:
Construction of a 419-foot-tall hotel at 140 West 28th Street in Chelsea is passing the halfway mark. Workers are currently pouring the 29th floor and getting ready to create the form work for the 30th floor.

The tower is designed by Gene Kaufman Architect and is being developed by Eastern Consolidated. The property successfully secured a $121.35 million debt and equity package last year thanks to the Bank of the Ozarks and Square Mile Capital Management. There will be 526 rooms divided among a Marriott, TownePlace Suites, and Springhill Suites. Each will have its own separate lobby on the ground floor and shared common rooms.

This building will yield 178,000 square feet and come with a 1,500-square-foot public arcade, a fitness center, multiple meeting rooms, and a dining room. The design of the tower consists of a fairly simple grid of windows on the main northern elevation. The eastern and western elevations would be left as blank party walls. Given the projected height, this will easily stand out above the rest of the block and afford views of Lower Manhattan and Midtown.

140 West 28th Street is most likely going to to top out in the second half of 2019 and be finished sometime early next year.

Gene Kaufman’s Marriott Hotel Tops Out At 140 West 28th Street In Chelsea

Quote:
Construction of a new 46-story, dual-brand Marriott hotel at 140 West 28th Street in Manhattan is now topped out. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects for the McSam Hotel Group, the structure stands 470 feet above Chelsea with exterior cladding that resembles a single, continuous metal panel.

The development is on schedule to debut in 2020 as both a Towne Place and Springhill Suites with a total of 531 guest rooms. A portion of these suites will include private terraces.

Additional building components for the hotel include a fitness center, meeting rooms, a dining room with an outdoor terrace, and two separate lobbies. The building will also contain a new public arcade.

When complete the building will comprise just over 173,000 square feet.

Blight.

Tear it down. Just like San Juan Hill. This is a blighted ghetto of a building.

Sorry, but this comment is absurd. The "blight" was the tenement that used to sit here, not the 45-floor hotel, with no parking, that replaced it.

I hope hundreds more of these hotels are built. They're great for the economy and urban form. You cannot be an urbanist and simultaneously decry this kind of development.

Plenty more will be built. Tourism has taken a big hit, but will bounce back. So long as the city continues to grow business wise, and visitors wise, these hotels will continue to rise. Can't have winners all of the time with towers/high rises. Some will be gems, many will not. Tends to hold water. Generally "X" city is full of nice things, and shitty things. If the demand requests budget functionality, budget functionality it shall get, and this will extend to hospitality, residential condos/rentals, mixed-used, office... ect.

I don't know what this magical mystical "urbanist" character that you have just defined is.

Apparently it means being an apologist for literally the crappiest, cheapest buildings going up on the face of the earth.

I guess London, where they actually invest in their architecture and development, must be "anti-urban." Guess it's lost its way for not inviting Sam Chang to come in and crap all over its cityscape with buildings better suited for Luanda.

I'm sure you'll have some moronic comment. So go ahead, Sam Chan- I mean, Crawford.

I don’t understand how the city allows developers to build these buildings. They are absolutely terrible. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t see this turds being built in other US cities... ♂️
