Also, I found another picture showing a sliver of the PE tunnel as it heads under Ft. Moore Hill, and it comes from the wonderful collection of photos by Arnold Hylen. But still no luck finding shots of the north portal!

Arnold Hylen, 1953, Cal State Library

A few years ago I found a photo of the north portal to the tunnel - a tunnel I road thru many times with my mother on our way to Bullocks. But the photo seems to have been lost in a crash of an old computer that I was glad to rid myself of. I been looking for it again, but I have no idea where I found it to begin with. Shown was the concrete head-wall of the cut and a row of old houses above. It may have been linked to a Pacific Electric site or book. I need to go through the several books I have to see if it might be in one of those.

Well here's hoping you find it, belmont bob! PS welcome to the forum; firsthand memories are most appreciated.

Back to the tunnels, I'm currently going through all 497 photos of Arnold Hylen's over on the Cal State Library website and came across what I can only assume is the retaining wall to the south portal of the tunnel as it heads under Fort Moore Hill. The shot dates from 1949, and assuming I have my bearings straight that would be North Hill Street all torn up in the mid-ground, no doubt in the process of being wiped away for the coming freeways.

LOL. my older brother got a transfer so he could go to Marshall but I chose to follow in my parents footsteps and go to Belmont...and it was a good school in those days, so we could go back and forth about which was best but we sure had good times no matter what.

Never heard of Adams Square until today.*

I've seen this before but its always fun to see again. Lot's of history here. Kate Hepburn tends to steal the show and even invades Mr. Mayer's space.

We can also see that they're all in full movie makeup. I believe they had a nice catered lunch after this was taken.

This poses some interesting questions...

Voting machine,1928

Close-up view of a voting machine on November 6, 1928. The big handle closes a curtain about the machine booth, and the voter turns attention to the mechanical ballot board. He may vote a straight party ticket by turning one of the key levers shown by arrows at left. To vote for individuals, he turns the corresponding keys beneath their names. On propositions he may turn either a yes or a no key to register his vote. Parties on this ballot are: Prohibition, Republican, Democratic, and Socialist. The names are duplicated for Electors of President and Vice-President under both the Prohibition and Republican parties. Upton Sinclair is on the Socialist ballot.

Traffic Accident...Sepulveda Boulevard South of Mulholland Drive, 1951

10 October 1951. Mrs. Luella B. Lingle, 42, 7524 Austin Ave., Van Nuys, was taken to Santa Monica Emergency Hospital with a fractured arm and probable fractured nose plus severe lacerations after her car crashed into a power pole approximately one mile south of the Mulholland tunnel on Sepulveda. Mrs. Lingle told police she was going north on Sepulveda about 30 or 35 mph and apparently went to sleep. Mrs. Lingle is employed at the same hospital -- Santa Monica Hospital, in the diet kitchen. The hospital says she is in fair condition. 4:00 am".

In the upper left of the great photo above, the original Grandview Gardens is visible. On many a late night ramble circa '09-'10, I walked (or stumbled) past this vacant lot where these great, old, warm signs stood glowing, still carrying the torch for their long lost friend. I always wondered what once stood behind them.

This sure looks complicated and would take a lot of concentration on the part of the voter to avoid mistakes, but at least there were no hanging chads!!!

I had no idea it was so rough along the immediate perimeter of Chinatown. Did you take this on one of your late night walks? ...and what's going on with the tents?

I find this snap very noirish.

This is better than hanging chads. Can you imagine the howling (entirely justified) if one of the major parties today could figure out a way to have their candidates (or electors) listed twice on the same ballot? Let's see, if I remember correctly the Republicans won in '28, right? How old is Karl Rove? He wasn't around in '28 was he? Nah, I guess I'm just getting paranoid.

It looks as if the street has been widened and the line rebuilt with maybe a higher voltage at the top. But Mrs. Lingle will have to go airborne to get over that guard rail. And the addition of the rail suggests that since the road widening other Mrs. Lingle’s may have had sudden encounters with the pole.

Thomas Starr King Middle School, 1929

Aerial view of King Junior High School from the southeast in November 1929.
King Middle School is a public school that has been educating students from the Franklin Hills, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Hollywood neighborhoods since 1926. In 1995, Thomas Starr King Junior High School reconfigured to a 6th through 8th middle school; it has approximately 2,854 students. In September of 1996, the school community established a strict dress code and uniform policy that states that the school uniform must be worn while attending school, intersession or during school-sponsored activities. It is a year-round school, which runs on three tracks. Tracks B and C start at the beginning of July, and Track A begins at the end of August. Thomas Starr King (1824-1864) was a Unitarian minister, orator, teacher, activist for social justice, and ardent patriot.

Wow, Thomas Starr King (1824-1864), "activist for social justice", must be spinning in his grave.

King Middle School does indeed have a mandatory uniform policy:

http://www.kingms.org/school_policies.jsp#Uniform

However this contravenes both LAUSD policy, State law and the students' First Amendment Rights under the Constitution.

Students do not shed their constitutional rights when they enter the schoolhouse door."
(US Supreme Court, Tinker vs. Des Moines 1969)

LAUSD Policy BUL-2549.1 (last updated December 15, 2009) states:

"Courts have generally interpreted a student’s choice of attire as a form of
expression protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. In general,
the only restrictions that may be placed on attire are in cases where it disrupts
the educational program or is necessary for the health and safety of the school
environment.
("Background")

"Consistent with these guidelines, hair, sideburns,
mustaches, and beards may be worn at any length or style,
and clothing may be of any fashion, style or design, as
determined by the student and his/her parents/guardians."
(Section I.B.5)

"SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICIES
A school uniform policy sets forth requirements for student attire.
However, school uniform policies are voluntary. If a student’s parent
or guardian exercises the right to opt out of the school uniform
policy, the student must follow the student dress code."
(Section II.A.)

If the student’s parents/guardians choose not to have the student
comply with the school uniform policy, the student shall not be
penalized academically, suspended or expelled from school, or
otherwise discriminated against or denied attendance to school
or participation in school activities.
(Section II.A.4.)

Parents/guardians choosing to opt out of the school
uniform policy shall indicate such choice by
submitting a written statement to the school, which
shall be effective upon receipt. Attachment E
includes a form schools may provide to
parents/guardians who ask to opt out.
Parents/guardians are not required to explain or
justify their decision to opt out.
(Section II.B.4)

The school uniform policy must make clear that no
student shall be considered noncompliant with the
policy in the following instances:

When a student wears a button, armband or other
accouterment to exercise the right to freedom of
expression as provided by Education Code 48907,
unless the button, armband or other accouterment
falls outside speech protected by First
Amendment (see Part II A 4, above)
(Section II.B.6.d.2).)

http://notebook.lausd.net/pls/ptl/do...%20(PDF)_1.PDF

In my long association with LAUSD schools, I am continually amazed that staff, on occasion, think their prejudices and desire for control trump both State and Federal law plus official LAUSD policy. What exactly are they trying to teach the students in this instance? I'll send KMS and the District an email.
