Siberia from north to east. Part 5 : Krasnoyarsk

So here is the fifth thread about the trip I did this summer in Siberia.
Here are the links towards the four first threads :
Siberia from North to East. Part 1 : Norilsk
Siberia from North to East. Part 2 : Dudinka
Siberia from North to East. Part 3 : Along the Yenisei
Siberia from North to East. Part 4 : Yeniseisk and Podtesovo

Krasnoyarsk is one of the important cities of central Siberia. It's just close to one million of people, but after several days in the middle of the vast and empty taïga, it felt like the biggest city on Earth.

1- Main bridge of the city, crossing the Yenisei river, taken from my hotel.

2- A very foggy day. It's a pity.

I didn't take any pic of the train station but the building was pretty grand and impressive.

Very interesting. The boulders & natural scenery are beautiful. And enjoyed seeing the city.

Nice pictures. This place seems to be pretty far south. Just what is the definition of Siberia anyway? I thought it was just the northern, desolate, forested and tundra areas.

It looks like there's more wealth in this city than the other places so far. The cars and highrises seem to indicate this. There's still some weird contrast between the modern highrises and little rundown wooden houses, separated by as little as a creek.

Another nice tour! Krasnoyark looks like an interesting but eerie city. The photo of that kid riding a zebra was a pure wtf-moment. lol

I loved your thread on Norilsk which was riveting with severity and depressing, but this city looks quite livable.

There are so many striking contrasts in how/where people live. These are fascinating photos.

Perhaps because it is a modern looking city, but, I like the feel of Krasnoyarsk. I agree about the pet zebra?! And to xzmattzx's question, I, too, am curious as to the "definition" of what is Siberia. Interesting pictures, thanks!

I knew that there was something familiar in the first picture you posted, it took a few minutes and then I realized that Krasnoyarsk and the nearby dam are on the old 10-ruble bills:

I don't think you could have matched the angle of the bridge from the bill any better if you tried:

No, Siberia (Сибирь) spans the width of Russia north to south, from the Urals in the West to either about two-thirds of the way to the Pacific, where the Russian Far East (Дальний восток) begins. This is an area easily bigger than the lower 48 on its own.

(Nikolai V. Shokhirev, shokhirev.com)

Some definitions also toss in the Far East, which has Khabarovsk and Vladivostok, to include all of Russian past the Urals, a titanic landmass around the size of the United States and Eurozone combined.

This stretch of river really reminds me of the lower Hudson Valley, esp. around Stormking Mtn. (with the single RR track below) and Breakneck Ridge. Almost gives me one of those familiarity head-rushes looking at it.

Wow that must be strange to go from nothing to a big city especially after that boat tour. Very different for sure...
