I smoked for 15 years and have been tobacco free for 37 years now…..I can’t even think of anything to say about the subject other than nurse Shirley Gellman probably died many years ago from lung cancer….. always glad I found the resolve to stop....

Long time no see!

Forum friends, a belated (and very guilt ridden) hello!

I've missed this place and apologize for my long absence. Last year I was spending so much time exploring the wonders of Noirish Los Angeles (both this forum and the city itself!) that I was neglecting some things...then I lost two family members and suddenly my attention was focused elsewhere. I logged in a few times to browse new contributions but there has been so much new content...I felt I'd lost my momentum here and that it would take months to catch up.

Anyway, here I am, still alive and enjoying Los Angeles. My wife and I still do hikes and city walks, but our big thing lately has been bicycling around L. A., often at night. Naturally, we've passed by hundreds of buildings and places discussed here, and it's been interesting to re-experience these locales by night, by bike.

A couple of "new" (to me at least) areas have piqued my interest. Colorado Street in Eagle Rock has a lot of interesting noirish architecture and seems to merit exploration and research. There are some great old motels and restaurants that look like they're straight out of the 40's and 50's. Another area that really intrigues me is Santa Fe St., downtown, which I think has been covered here a bit. It seems to have a lot of interesting old buildings and I believe this is one of the oldest streets in DTLA. I would like to know more about it and if I can get of my butt and contribute here again, Santa Fe St. seems a good topic.

But for now I mainly wanted to reintroduce myself, and say hello to ER and my other friends here. I don't know if I'll ever get through all the pages that passed me by here but having re-appeared finally, I look forward to seeing at least some of what I've missed over the last year. Hi again, everyone!

3940dxer, we have a fairly new member named Lorendoc who was inspired by your earlier posts on Lookout Mountain.
I thought you might like to see his posts. (maybe you have already)

Driving up Broadway in the google-mobile I spotted a small sign in the back of a parking lot. Hmmm...what does it say? It looks like...

gsv

I couldn't believe my eyes. The sign does indeed say GIRLS!

gsv

-actually, it says GIRLS dance.

detail

Since the views from google-mobile are obviously limited , I drove over to Spring Street to try and get a better look.

As far as I could tell, the sign is on the back wall of 833 S. Spring Street.

gsv

On front of 833 S. Spring there's an even better sign, a large vertical DANCING girls sign.

gsv

detail

time for some tuck pointing.

I noticed that something was engraved above the front entrance so I zeroed in. City something, clob?...or Club...maybe.

Notice the reverse side of the alley (GIRLS) sign is visible at right towards the back of the building.

In this aerial I've outlined the 'Dancing Girls' building, 833 S. Spring, in red. The old Avolon Ballroom site is outlined in yellow (there was a small parking lot in between).

google aerial

In this vintage view, 833 S. Spring Street is on the right.

ocdom

At this point in time the Avodon Ballroom building is still an Auto Park, and there's a small building where the parking lot will be.

detail. -showing the arched entrance of 833 S. Spring Street

Armed with 'City Club' as search words, I eventually located http://doves2day.blogspot.com/.
The blog had excellent information on 833 S. Spring Street.

http://doves2day.blogspot.com/

833 South Spring Street was built in 1924 as the headquarters of the City Club, a Los Angeles civic organization with a membership of 2500 leaders of business, industry, and finance. But after less than 10 years, the City Club was gone. For the next 60 years it was home to numerous taxi-dancehalls.

fourth floor dining room. (later the Roseland Roof, among others)

http://doves2day.blogspot.com/

In this view, Los Angeles City Club is still painted on the south wall of 833 S. Spring. (just below the 5 globe street light)

LAPL

City Club no more, now it's the Roseland Roof, circa 1939. (notice 'Roof' within the arched front entrance)

LAPL

sex sells

http://doves2day.blogspot.com/

Roseland Roof DANCING. That's Spring Street on the left and Main Street on the right, as viewed from 9th Street.

Eventually the City Club/Roseland Roof became the 41 Club, The Swanky, and the 833 Club.

as the 41 Club

http://doves2day.blogspot.com/

There's the term "White Spot" again. urgh!

One last look. 833 S. Spring Street today. A true survivor.

gsv

more to come....

The location is Los Angeles Railway's South Park shops, between 54 and 55th, Avalon and San Pedro streets. This is where new cars were built, old ones rebuilt and all forms of general upkeep and maintenance were performed.
Today the site is being developed into the South Los Angeles Wetland Park and Mary Angelou Community High School.

The car in the photo is a type "H", the first of which were built by St Louis Car Company in 1921. You can still ride one as a number were saved and 3 examples can be found at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA.

See: http://metroprimaryresources.info/en...th-park-shops/

Jack

Thank you Wig-Wag, but do you know who's arm that is? (just kidding

Whenever I come across a photograph of an old Los Angeles transit car I know you'll come through.

Actually, the arm belongs to Nurse Shirley Gellman. She was trying to wave down a streetcar that could take her to LA County General Hospital. Seems she couldn't stop coughing due to her 3-pack a day habit of lighting up Fatimas. I hear she eventually cut back to 2 packs a day, and lived to the ripe old age of 28.

Good for you Belmont Bob. Etherial Reality posted that photo of the nurse and here we have a doctor hyping cigs. Times have changed.

My mom used to tell about the Lucky package color. Here its green. During WW II it became white because the green printer's color was need for the war effort. My mom would often tell me some unusual things.
