This area was first really developed as an industrial park starting in about 1880 when a spur line was built along with a factory for the Nova Scotia Cotton Manufacturing Company. It employed about 600 people but that building burned down in the Halifax Explosion along with some exhibition buildings nearby. A lot of the "devastation" pictures of the explosion are of this area.

It is gone now but one of the old brick industrial buildings survived until 2015 or so on this site: https://www.google.com/maps/@44.6582...7i13312!8i6656

The Halifax Forum is actually a repurposed agricultural exhibition building; it was not built as an arena. The main exhibition hall was destroyed in the explosion. The city is restoring the Halifax Forum, undoing some of the ugly renos of the 70's-90's.

It's too bad so few of those old brick buildings survived because they might have added some nice texture and warmth to an eventual redevelopment. I think a good redevelopment of this area would recreate a bit of that feel instead of using only cold glass/metal materials (everything these days seems to be grey/white).

The main bit of confusion seems to be that you're set on the original site suggestion and while others are less enthused and it isn't clear as to the best way to make a decision. Perhaps a simple vote would work assuming it doesn't end in a tie lol.

I've done a bit of exploratory work on the superstore site. I had a nice vision for it but I'm going back to the boards on that one ha. After doing an extensive street view tour of the area I reached 2 conclusions 1) someday I will live in Halifax 2) I understand why HRM planning insists on long blocks perpendicular to the waterfront to preserve waterfront views.

I finally started the 1075 Barrington site massing: I'm feeling somewhat motivated. Locals, feedback welcomed.

Not a Haligonian, but had a stint in Halifax for some schooling. Had many, many, many late night trips to the Superstore on this site, after studio. My two cents:

I quite like the the idea to carry the existing streets and allow them to permeate through the site. It's really kind of a shame that the railway breaks the grid here, but oh well.

I also like the general height of your proposal as currently massed.

If I had one suggestion, it would be to vary the heights of the buildings such that the tallest one is where the Superstore is now and the shortest one fronts the park. The site runs North-South, so you could allow for some variety in the massing while not casting a lot of shade on Cornwallis Park.

I would personally also be inclined to puncture the volumes a bit to allow light to penetrate between them across the site. I think the the South facade of the volume closest to the park is looking a little shaded, so I might consider modifying the central volume to mitigate this a bit.

Looking forward to seeing the final product!

So this is bad of me but I've done nothing. I may be able to meet an August 1st deadline. (The weather is nice, the grass is green and the roads are twisty: I'd rather be on the road than on the computer unless I'm looking at stock charts.) Is 1 August ok?

Fine by me, although I think cancelling it altogether may be an option too...

I have 4 competing ideas for the train station site:
1) a university campus with student rental housing and some CRU
2) mostly office and some light industrial buildings
3) residential - rental and condos with CRU
4) a large place of worship

I'll do the next round if the site is a tiny infill. Determining the use of a multi-acre site is more of a political than design exercise.

Sorry I'm going to miss the 1 August deadline. Been rather busy with other projects. Perhaps we could find a tower site somewhere? How about a tower at 372 Yonge Street? That's the Elephant and Castle site southwest corner Yonge and Gerrard.

From UT:
372 YONGE ST
Ward 11 - Tor & E.York District

Proposal for a 74-storey mixed-use building comprised of 3693.10 square metres of non-residential floor area and 32,178.20 square metres of residential gross floor area. A total of 406 residential dwelling units are proposed.

I had a dream I was working on this project, hanging out in downtown Halifax talking to the locals about what they want here. (In reality, I've never been to Halifax.) Two eight storey quads - U campus I guess - and a narrow rental townhouse mews closest to the other new rental building. Maybe I'll do a sketch this week.

Good scale. Courtyards are always a great addition. Design would contrast well with the older building stock.

Concept for the Young and Robie site:

30 storeys max height, green areas are parks, black grid is the extended street network, parking garage is for the arena/market

That last one has a bit of a Le Corbusier vibe, but without the parks.

Young and Robie - Halifax - Robie Street facades between Almon and Young:

rear lane off Almon and Robie

I'm going for a warehouse aesthetic - brick podiums with five residential towers of 30 storeys between Young and Almon plus an office tower. Nine buildings complete; 12 to go.
