Watched that coming into port and thinking "wow, that thing's barely above the water line". The logo on the side of the ship was half-submerged!

Heavy lift ships like this are designed with ballast tanks so that they can match their deck height with the dock that the cranes are to roll onto. And because the cranes are tall, they can fill the ballast tanks to lower their overall height in order to fit under harbour bridges. For example, the MV Albatross can actually submerge it's main cargo deck up to a depth of over 9 meters.

Seems like one of them is still in Egypt (no idea when the photo was taken). Not sure where the two other went (they were in Egypt as well a few years ago after a trip to UAE)

Here's a November update.

Quote:
In the update, the port said that the land over the lagoon in the eastern expansion area continues to settle and will be removed in January 2021. The northeast perimeter dyke is now complete.

They also added that the infilling south of the caissons in the north end of the western expansion area is underway. A caisson is a concrete structure that is filled with rock to create an underwater wall.

These large boxes (20m deep, 37m long, 14.5m wide) were floated to the area and then filled with rock to create an underwater wall. They are used to build the new berth face for the Centerm terminal.

“We received approval to continue construction on the terminal from November 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. Work will take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is not expected to generate significant noise,” the port said.

The Centerm Expansion Project, delivered by Centennial Expansion Partners (CXP), is set to be complete by the end of 2021.

Yeah, it is pretty hidden overall but looks really urban. If we would be an ambitious Metro, one would see such ramps and infrastructure go up all over the place but we aren't.

Dumb question. Is that overpass ramp for container trucks?

Yes, 'ambition' is all it takes: it's the magic pill - cures the chronically mentally ill and makes cities absolutely fabulous. Deep thoughts.

Yes. It's related to the Centerm containerport expansion, which is adding 15% extra 'land' area, and will be able to handle 1.5 million TEUs (20 foot equivalents) from around 900,000 today. There will be a new traffic pattern when it's finished, and the current Heatley Street overpass will be removed. It makes truck movement to Highway 1 easier by crossing two rail crossings, and removing one on the port land. It should reduce truck traffic on East Hastings as well. It's all being built within the Port's jurisdiction, on their land.

The new Centennial Road Overpass will open around June 27 and the Heatley Ave Overpass will close to truck traffic. For now Heatley will stay open only for non-truck traffic entering the port.

The new Centennial Road overpass will open as early as June 27, 2021

As of June 27, 2021, the Heatley Avenue overpass outbound lane will be closed to all traffic. Only the inbound lane will remain open for traffic such as passenger vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists entering port lands.
