It is fucking insane that people are regularly getting away with drinking and driving. in this day and age. What a bunch of worthless deplorables.

I remember when I was a kid, a couple of my friends went on a day trip with one kid's dad to North Dakota to buy something he needed... one of my pals told me about how the dad bought a 6 pack of some cheap American beer and he just drank them on the ride home, being careful to get rid of them all before hitting the Canadian border. Pound one back, throw the empty can out the window, crack another one open... this must have been around 1992 or so.

It's not like he was a bad dad or anything like that, his son went on to become a highly accomplished medical specialist. I guess in those days even good dads could crush a few brewskis and toss the cans out onto the Interstate

You rarely see people snacking while walking in Seoul.
the same in Tokyo, very hard to find garbage cans on the street, and you never see people walking while eating, drinking, or smoking. I don't know if it's a cultural thing about walking and eating but it's not something they do.
You do find clusters of people standing outside at lunchtimes eating outside 7-11 for instance, when I was there I got into the habit of drinking a pop outside the store before walking off.

when I was in South Africa, they drink a lot. One night I went to dinner with my cousin and her bf at the time, he got home from work, drank almost a 6 pack, we then went out to a family friend for dinner and on the way he drank 2 more of another 6 pack and finished of the 6 pack at the friends house. And they drive like mad there too, it was pretty yikes.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I was an out-of-car-window-litter-jagoff back in my late teens. Now I see a solitary particle of something on the ground and I get irritated. I'd beat the hell out of my late teen self if I saw him today (I was mostly a very well mannered and behaved fellow, but the littering ...).

Yup. Japan and Korea share this cultural quirk.

Both Tokyo and Seoul have made it illegal to smoke on the streets. There are designated smoking areas (usually in alleys behind office buildings or near convenience stores) for people to cluster and smoke or vape. It's awesome not having plumes of smoke blowing in to your face from people walking in front of you. It also contains cigarette butts to a designated area as well.

The third best thing about Seoul/Tokyo and many other Asian cities (after the vibrancy and the paucity of crime) is how immaculately clean they are, relative to North American and European cities.

Yup - Singapore stood out to me in this regard. However, the lack of garbage cans on the MRT for example was quite annoying. I am guessing everyone just carried around their own trash until they got home?
