Winnipeg CMA Population in 5 Years: Predictions

According to population projections posted by Pegger5, the population of the Winnipeg CMA in 2008 was approximately 714,800. By mid 2013, it is expected to pass the 750,000 mark. What is your take on this? Do you think it will exceed projections or fall short?

The reasons I think it will exceed projections, is Winnipeg's diversiied economy is weathering the economic storm better than any large Canadian city, the cost of living and housing pricing are among the lowest in any Canadian centre over 100,000 people. The vacancy rate is still very low, meaning that there will be a need to construct new homes. Finally, there are infrastructure improvements such as Centreport, the new Airport Terminal, Bus Station, expansion of the University of Winnipeg, and construction of the new Winnipeg Stadium.

Additionally there have been preliminary talks about building a smaller arena (5500-7000 seats) that would suit entertainment acts deemed to small for the MTS Centre, and possibly suited for a WHL team. I have never been more optimistic about my hometown. I think the teens (?) 2010-19 will be a boom period for the city and province.

PS...my prediction: 762,500

As much as I'm a huge optimist, I will have to disagree. 736,000 people, maybe, but not 762,500.

I seriously hope I'm wrong though because we definitely have a huge potential to grow as a city, and if I am wrong, I'll be a very happy man.

As of now we are estimated to be 732,000. So 2013: I will be conservative and say 755,000.

As Dennis said, we are already at about 732,000 so in about 5 years we should be about 760,00.

Winnipeg is at 732,563 for 2008, so I would say 780,000 for 2013.

Those numbers were just estimates I took from another post. New StatsCan numbers put us as of 2008 at over 730K so my answer is 10K a year to become 780K ish...

This is an interesting thread .... Winnipeg's population by mid 2013.

With the increasing momentum Winnipeg is really only just starting to awaken to its potential. I'd say that Winnipeg's avg population growth will continue to increase over the next decade, if it stays on the same (business growth) track.

I'll go out on the limb and say that Winnipeg will be 763,000+, and the Winnipeg Capital Region will surpass 815,000.

The Centre Port era is about to begin. Let the GOOD times roll.

Maybe by 2030 it'll reach a mill. I think Winnipeg will very soon overtake Quebec City as #7 in the nation.

It's weird, at one time Winnipeg was #4 in Canada, dropped all the way down to #9, and should eventually rebound a bit to #7.

what exactly do you base the 8,000 on..and for how long do you think it's been growing by that rate..how many years? and don't factor in new immigrants because of the several thousand who arrive here, almost half leave for greener pastures within six months.
