At 4:07 in this video PME Dean Matthew Tirrell confirms the school plans to expand to "the north and the northwest", which means the adjacent buildings are toast and will be replaced, as expected.

Sigh..Blair Kamin. Sometimes his reviews are thoughtful, but for the most part, he's a parochial, bloviating jerk.

Seemed like he liked it while adding a preface that he hates egotistical design which was quite... egotistic

I think the Archpaper article is better just by virtue of the fact that they actually interview/talk with the architects, which is missing from Kamin's take. That type of one-on-one helps illuminate the logic behind a design, but a writer like Kamin isn't interested in that, because then he wouldn't be able to ramble on and on. Ego indeed, and one the reasons I find him to be repellent.

I prefer the former. The latter looks likes a Soviet prison.

Here are the projects that I am aware of in the planning phase in Hyde Park. Does anyone know of anything else major?

1) Harper Court Phase II
2) Parking garage / rec center by Woodlawn Commons / Keller Center
3) new building for Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering
4) Cancer Hospital
5) new dorm (there's said to be talk of one more dorm to help house all the undergrads)

The Law School is holding some classes in the Rube:

"September 28 In-person and blended classes begin to meet at the Law School and the Rubenstein Forum. Library opens."

https://www.law.uchicago.edu/autumn-2020

So the building is open in some manner. I am not (necessarily) suggesting you pretend to be a Law School student.

Or just pose as a donor, and then they will welcome you with open arms.

Seems like it, but I thought people on this forum pretend OPC doesn't exist.

Current COVID-19 restrictions at UChicago mean that you likely need to be specifically granted card access to the building. At least, I'm pretty sure my card currently only opens my building (and only because I have "essential" lab access).

The Maroon mentions this new building near the hospital. The master plan shows that is supposed to (eventually) be an expansion of the parking garage. Don't know if this is a temporary or long-term building.

It's permanent, intended as a replacement for the current high bay research building that will eventually be replaced to make room for a massive new research building near ERC, which is being planned for completion by the middle of the decade.

Interesting. And the Governor did say recently the State will still be contributing money for a UChicago building...
