Favorite Passtimes in St. John's

I am going to be putting together a resource for things to do in the metro area and I was wondering what your favorite things to do in your free time in the city or metro area?

even favorite events for the seaon (fall/winter)

It could even be walking in a certian area/ shows/ hang out spot/ nightlife

Let me know what you uys think so I can add it to my project I'll post a link when it's all finished as well

Oh boy! Let me think...

-Going for an evening walk downtown with that special someone. And ending that walk with a coffee at Coffee & Co. Or at Rocket if you're feeling super adventurous.
-Sledding at Victoria Park.
-Going to CBTG's on a weeknight to listen to some local band without having to endure the huge crowd.
-Slamming back drinks at Christians Pub (the upstairs bar, not the downstairs).
-Walking the Rennie's River trail.

I also support Christian's Pubs and walks along Water Street / Duckworth Street / New Gower Street / Signal Hill.

Also, who can say no to an Ice Caps game?

Personal favorite: jogging the Quidi Vidi / Long Pond trails.

A few more that I love:

- Lunch on George Street. It feels like you're right on the harbourfront of a small tourist town like, say, Summerside, PEI. And the mussells are delicious.

- Exploring the lanes of the residential areas of old town. They're really fun to find.

- Walking/window-shopping downtown. There are so many local stores, and so many interesting imports. You can find a lot of big brand names you wouldn't expect here.

2. Hiking the East Coast Trail system
3. Dining at many of the great downtown restaurants (e.g. Chinched, Bistro Sophia, Blue on Water, Magnum & Steins, Gypsy Tea Room, Saltwater, etc.)

Just to name a few...

1)Drinking coffee on the Atlantic Place patio on a sunny morning in the summer.
2)Hiking the East coast trail.
3)Going for a drive to Pouch Cove or down the Southern Shore Highway.
4)Cross-country skiing in Pippy Park in the winter.
5)Walking in Bowring Park.
6)Eating/drinking downtown. Particularly breakfast at Rocket or spending an evening at Shamrock City or Christains.
7)Attending festivals downtown.

Without getting too specific (which I could later).

Walking. I mean, it's my favourite pastime regardless of location.

Predrinking. I live close to downtown, so everyone usually gathers in my living room for a couple hours before heading out.

Public skating at Mile One. Haven't gone since 2011 because I'm not going to go alone, but I'm trying to talk a friend into trying it out with me (I'd love the skating trail at Bannerman Park).

Hockey games. Caps or senior league games. Mount Pearl suspended play this season, so the latter is out.

Sledding. I haven't found many good hills, but there's the one beside MUN in Pippy Park that's popular.

As for nightlife. George St. gets old, but if I go there it's usually Christian's (upstairs) or Yellowbelly (Underbelly - my favourite place in town), though I do get dragged pretty much everywhere else. In general I much prefer the quieter Water St. bars like Grapevine and Franklin Hotel. I avoid clubs like the plague.

How is Franklin Hotel? I've never been there, but it seems like a rather nice place.

I also (try) avoiding night clubs and sticking to upstairs of Christians, but after plenty of screech and coke and singing along to the music I magically appear on the Dusk dancefloor fist pumping?? Mysteries of George Street.

Wait, you're telling me Screech isn't just a horrible joke we play on tourists?

I like it, but I've only actually been there twice I think. It's dark, quieter, and plenty of tables for small groups or couples to sit at.

I love screech. It's a little fruitier than other typical dark rums, that's why I prefer it over things like Navy rum

Crazy. I can't enjoy rum. Or scotch. Or anything hard, really. Unless it's in some fruity, overpoweringly-flavoured mixed drink, which defeats the purpose.

Beer, wine, gin/soda with lime, and a nice sherry/port are the only things I really drink.

Interesting, I got super drunk one night and ended up half way in to a bottle of Harvey's sherry thinking it was the best thing ever. I bought my own bottle and didn't like it sober. Now I have to get super drunk before being able to drink it

And yes, we all knew this thread would make its way to liquor eventually. Winters are long, dark, and wet....what else does one do to make them more cheerful?
