The same house today. While I was taking pictures around this intersection with my back to this house, I heard a voice loudly say "You know, you could get the same pictures from Google." I turned around and saw a guy standing on the upper deck, and I told him "yeah, but they wouldn't be as clear." I thought, 'What an asshole.' I took a few more pictures and noticed out of the corner of my eye that he was still standing on the deck. He didn't go back inside the house until he saw me get into my car. Note how the back end of the car is sticking out of the garage in the old picture. In the new picture they made the garage deeper with what looks like an aluminum shed.

They have a fire hydrant now but no sidewalks. Would hate to mow the front yard. Looks like they had a better idea in the old picture.

Many old garages would not fit a large car like a Cadillac, hence the extension. Plus they've eliminated the downstairs corner window and added some new windows, here and there. That window A/C adds something also....not sure what though. That large Mexican Palmetto is probably not a good choice in that location. These things do grow.

I agree, the ivy is much better.

LAPD Motors lined up for inspecion in 1942. Notice flag denoting how many LAPD Officers serving in the armed forces. Also notice the civil defense helmet attached to the rear of the motor cycle. They also carried a gas mask on the batwing faring. The building in back of them is a where the Traffic Div. was housed which was on N. Figueroa.

I found this photograph of 479 East Vernon Avenue on ebay the other day.

I immediately hopped on the 'googlemobile' and headed over to the 400 block of E. Vernon.

This particular house wasn't there, but there were similar houses that have survived.

The real surprise was this marvelous building.

With it's three bays, my guess is that it used to be a garage of some kind.
There is a multi-story section as well, equally elaborate in architectural detail. (and a modern AT&T addition)

From this aerial view, you can see from the rooftop 'mechanics' that the building is in use by AT&T.

if you look at the top right you can see a grassy area..thats the lower field.the street that the long tan building with green trim is on should be Texas Ave.(going east -west/right- left)There is an arched brick door also in the picture that im thinking is apart of the old shop building.

While it's nothing to get excited about, the building, or what's left of it, appears to still stand--the angle and drainpipe at right in both photos is the same. While Nash itself would survive the Crash and then the Depression, Almquist's timing wasn't good and his presence in the building didn't last long. Kurtz Dodge was in residence by 1932; Glenn Austin Chrysler by 1935; Frost and French Packard by 1943; and Jackson Kaiser-Frazer by 1948. When this great Art Deco building lost its character is unknown. This remodel is a huge improvement, isn't it?

Here is one prescient quote from the LA Times story that was posted by Mr. Wilshire. Evidently the electrician's wife was living in the home of the woman who he shot three times. He even spied on her with binoculars. Lots of drama here.
"...more than friends."....that's quite a strong hint.

Of the two main phone companies that existed in L.A. during the teens (Home and Los Angeles Telephone, which later combined and then morphed into Pacific Bell), I'm not sure which built this building--but it's always been a phone co building. It was the "Adams" exchange in the days before all-number dialing.

I like the look of the tile work around the third-floor windows (at least I think it's tile work). The same detail over the bay doors has been painted out.

There's a fabric manufacturers and wholesalers listed for this address, Guilbert Tex Inc, so maybe AT&T is only in the new bit. The wealth of skylights probably makes it quite pleasant inside the single story part.

I'm hoping someone finds a photo of when it was first built. I'm heartened that we still have so many buildings that could be rehabbed with minimal effort.
