Tesla is a multifaceted company. They produce cars, but also AI technology and batteries. It's also a clean energy company. They do solar panels and solar roofs, and home battery packs called Powerwalls, where you can save and store the energy for use during an outage.

Yes they do all that but they are still very overvalued. I'm not sure their value is sensible if they captured 100% of the automobile market share in the world.

Yes, and this is all manufacturing. Manufacturing has high overhead and lower margins than traditional tech. Tesla should be valued more like an auto company than a social media company.

I can understand Tesla being the most valuable car company but not worth almost 700 billion but they are seen (for now) as the forefront of innovation and defining the EV market. Plus solar and other renewable technologies.

I'm not complaining about the stock price and have been long on TSLA for a while.

Well Dacia is Romanian, so...

I have no idea if sales figures support this, but Dacia in Western Europe seems to be in the same place as Toyota/Honda were in the U.S. 30-40 years ago. The car of choice for budget-conscious buyers who valued reliability above all. Dacias are now everywhere in Germany.

Reality is that a huge workforce is what will make any city prosper, and tech jobs will almost certainly follow a trend of moving towards lower cost locales. Watch that happen especially after the Founder generation of these new companies dies off.

Covid plus (ironically) tech-enabled Zoom meetings are allowing lots of people to work remotely.

The great industrial cities of the early 20th century eventually lost huge proportions of their work force due to the same process.

I've never been to Silicon Valley but heard it is suburban sprawl with plain ranch houses fetching $1 million. I've had not heard much about San Jose urban core, and am surprised it has not developed an enviable urban cluster given the wealth in the area. San Francisco is of course, one of the greater cities on earth, but most of the tech firms are not based there.

This is mostly nonsense. The gusher of tech wealth emanating from the Bay Area, overwhelmingly, has nothing to do with SF. There's no reason to believe that a successful concept birthed 40-50 miles from SF would somehow generate major benefits to SF.

And wealth-generation, on its own, has nothing to do with urbanity. TX has been generating vast sums of oil-driven wealth, with no apparent impact on the urban form. SF's urban appeal has nothing to do with Silicon Valley.

That post was obviously hyperbole, but there's definitely truth to it especially if we expand beyond SF. If it were easier to build new buildings in the Bay Area in general, there's no doubt in my mind that we would likely have seen hundreds of thousands or millions more people crowding in over the last few decades.

For SF in particular, I know that the SSP trope is "all the big companies are south anyway" and while technically true, it's missing a lot of context to just state that over and over again. A lot of the newer companies are in SF (and thus more of the recent wealth), have major offices in SF, or have substantial shuttles running through SF every few minutes. Unlike in the dotcom boom times, SF has been an integral part of "Silicon Valley" for the last 15 years.

It's also useful to look at Seattle, a place that is just a bit easier to build in than SF (though that may not be the case in a few more years the way things have been trending), and a place that has seen a pretty major population increase to go along with its growing tech wealth. As it sits now, basically the only people moving to the Bay Area are tech folks and immigrants, and because the region is so anti-growth we see older tech companies exiting along with no other industries really expanding. This hasn't typically been true in boomtowns, where you'll generally see all industries expanding in order to capture some of the wealth created by whatever the wealth gusher is.

PS - it's even harder to build new housing in most of Silicon Valley than it is in SF proper.

I’m jealous of the Bay Area. Not for any of the above crap, but because you can actually drive a nice car there in the winter!

Damn it, midwestern winters!

I used to tolerate it, but we didn’t get to enjoy last summer.

As some have said, summer in Chicago is the reward for our winters.

The bargain we made to live here got all messed up!
