There are hundreds for London, but my fave's are St Pancras Station. When built it was the largest building in the world (there's a vast wrought iron train shed behind). The ornate 300 suite hotel part of it all, hugely expensive with newfangled lifts, fire-proofed, concrete floors, roaring fireplaces and gold leaf walls in every room fell out of fashion as shortly after they invented hot water plumbing. Also the building only had 2 bathrooms (which also nods toward the acceptable hygiene standards of the time), requiring an army of servants to ferry back and forth tubs, water, towels, spitoons and chamber pots (read: literally bowls for toilet). In 2004 it was converted from offices back to its luxury Victorian glory, this time with en-suites.

I guess it's only right that I post the McGraw Bell/clock tower in Ithaca (Cornell University):

Source: http://cornell-blog.tumblr.com/post/...y-mcgraw-tower

Some years back person/persons unknown somehow placed a pumpkin on the top of the tower:

Students play the chimes in the tower:

Quick question on the history of these things... were these seen as a public service from a time when personal time pieces were a rarity, or was it more of an advertising/fashion item.

^bit of both. Started off as a public service, and ended up being symbolic of a status building, that people would 'look up to' even if watches were widespread by then. Hence why offices and hotels started installing them into the plans well into the 20th century. Clocktowers have to certify they tell the correct time too, by law, so even the ones that have fallen into private hands has to have the occupant trained in working the thing. Clocks give it 'presence' and authority.

milwaukee's full of little surprises like that.

The sad part is that I've heard the Allen Bradley complex is a 1980's pomo travesty that uglied up a very handsome turn of the century industrial building. Apparently the entire inside still looks like timber-frame loft spaces and has beautiful old wood floors and huge beams from the old growth Wisconsin forests, but the outside now looks like a bunker. I would to see what it looked like before it was slandered.

Edit: Found an old picture of the AB complex in Milwaukee:

The opposite of the Allen Bradley situation is the Taylor Lofts in Chicago. This building used to look like this:

windycityroadwarrior.com

And everyone knew their used to be a clock tower up there, but either forgot about it or assumed the tower was all but destroyed. A few years ago they decide to convert the building to residential and what do they find? The nasty corrugated metal sheathing was covering up a nearly perfectly preserved clock tower. The horrendous metal hackjob was actually acting like a time capsule and preserving this beautiful clocktower for the future:

The restoration process wasn't as good as you think. Shortly after it was completed, pieces of stonework began falling off, and the building has been surrounded by protective scaffolding for a few years now. Investigations revealed an improper mixture in the grout used for the restoration project, and parts of the building could not hold up to the weather's freeze-thaw cycles. A multi-year lawsuit followed, and only now are things being repaired.

The next project to tackle is the extensive and expensive foundation repair to keep the building from sinking.

The "pomo" travesty you're talking about is a 1960s-and-later additions built on the block west of the earlier building from the early-1900s which still retains much of its original appearance.

Worcester State Hospital

The hospital has been demolished, but they kept the clock tower in place.
The Waterbury Republican-American newspaper just finished some restorations to the clocktower. They have a nice video on the history of the tower and they restoration work being done.

High above the city
A look at Waterbury’s landmark clock tower

November 12, 2016

An 8-month restoration of the clock tower at the Republican-American’s Meadow Street headquarters is nearing completion, Editor and Publisher William J. Pape II said.

The project, which cost more than $800,000, included extensive reinforcement and regrouting of cracks, reinforcing the arches under the parapet, and regrouting and sealing the brick work. The copper flashing was replaced or repaired as needed.

The work should be finished before December. Pape said the contractor still is looking for a method to reinforce wooden supports of the bell.

The project is meant to preserve the clock tower, which is modeled after the Torre de Mangia in Siena, Italy, and was designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead and White.
