When I was driving down San Felipe within the last week I could see they had already excavated a good deal(probably a floor or so down) and had some rebar and concrete already going in. If this Lawsuit means anything, Hines sure isn't showing it.

Driving by this past Friday, the base of the crane was in already. So much for stopping progress!

A Harris County judge has denied residents’ request for a temporary restraining order to halt construction of an office tower in the River Oaks area.

Residents filed a lawsuit last week aiming to prevent the construction of Hines’ 167,000-square-foot office building at 2229 San Felipe. The lawsuit cited private nuisances, such as the height of the building, as well as public nuisances, such as additional traffic in the area.

Hines disputes the plaintiffs’ claims, saying the 17-story tower is not out of place in the area — which also includes the 34-story Huntingdon residential tower and the 13-story River Oaks Bank Building — and that it is designed to minimize the impact on factors such as privacy and traffic in the area.

His media appearances “got the attention of Hines and Gilbane Construction,” Armstrong reports in a letter posted to an online news group focusing on the tower’s construction. “Fundamentally, there isn’t much that can be done,” he writes, “given the pace and scale of this construction. . . . We have loved this house and the neighborhood — up until December. This is a wonderful pocket for people who want access to everything the inner loop has to offer. Unfortunately, other people are discovering our secret. So we’ll just have to roll with the changes.“

Hines invests big bucks to be a good neighbor

Hines is aiming to be a good neighbor. To avoid costly injunctions and potential lawsuits, Houston-based Hines is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to import a crane from Italy that is designed to reduce the reach into neighboring properties.

The real estate development company is importing a Luffing crane from La Spezia, Italy, to use for construction at San Felipe Place, a 167,000-square-foot office tower located between Kirby and Shepherd drives. Leasing the crane adds an additional $350,000 to construction costs.

Given all the hubbub around the so-called Ashby high-rise, a proposed tower located at 1717 Bissonnet St. that has come under fire by nearby residents, Hines took a pre-emptive approach to the construction of San Felipe Place. One step it's taking is by importing this top-of-the-line crane.
