Great times for drinking.

1997 in montreal was a great drinking time, but the peel pub always sucked.

the cock and bull was still prime surly-old-man territory, though, and saint laurent north of pine (prince-arthur, actually) bore no hints of douchery whatsoever. the casa del popolo used to be a place called artishow and it had an unfinished basement where dejected montreal anglos of the era would consume drugs and alcohol. then there was miami... in those days, i wanted the city to get better — and i was right to want that — but my current nostalgia for the era knows no bounds.

kristian gravenor did a great three-part retrospective on montreal in the '90s for openfile, but it seems to be offline now. if you can find it, it's great, as is his blog "coolopolis".
