It's very mid-century cool......I wonder if it's ever been used as a movie location?

I think he meant "loupe." In any case, it's a 1930's Fageol, probably built in Oakland, CA.

Rare 1909 postcard.

I checked through the past posts and I don't believe we've seen this postcard of the Kensington Flats in Santa Monica.

The sentiment on the back says something about a short sickness on the train, and eating oranges, lemons....fruit juice & marmalade.

Here's the reverse with all it's interesting typography. -note the five different typefaces!

Temple Block, Spring & Main Streets.

I've been imagining this woman, dressed to the nines, walking to the junction of Main, Spring and Temple streets to have her photograph taken
in one of the most prominent buildings in the city. (or maybe she took her buggy

)

I was hoping to find 'Elite Gallery' painted on one of the windows in the Temple Block (shown below)

I think this is the same place.

"Kensington Apartments on 1746 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica, Calif."

The description says: "Apartments were built circa 1907 and became the Kensington Motel from 1960 to 1990."

A slight name change, but the details are all the same as the image above. The design looks a little different to both the image above and e_r's picture - maybe this is just a different side, or it got a makeover with the name change.

Kensington Flats update.

I've just found this later picture which shows Kensington Court behind the Hotel Chase. The source, SMPL again, dates it at 1950 or 1951.

After locating the Hotel Chase, I found these overhead views at californiacoastline.org. The first is from 1986. I think the Kensignton Motel (as in e_r's pictures above) is what I've outlined in red.

Wow that's really clear for such an old photo, e_r.

Payne and Stanton are both in the LA City Directories for several years, but they are together running the Elite Gallery
in only the 1881 and 1883 directories.

And as you can see, the photography studio is Blanchard of Los Angeles, Cal

I located two Blanchards that were photographers in the 1897 Los Angeles city directory.

and the other is James B. Blanchard at Plaza Gallery, 513 N. Main (r. sw cor. of Sunset Boulevard and Lucile)
lol...at first I thought Lucile was his wife, but it's a street.

Out of curiosity I typed "Lucile street, Los Angeles" into Google_Maps.
(but the only result is down in Marina Del Rey)

Well, Little Richard sang "I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight." (thanks for the earworm, e_r

), but I checked Google Maps and Lucile Avenue still intersects with Sunset Boulevard in the Silver Lake area. I don't know which corner Mr Blanchard was on.

I had a feeling that I'd seen an advert for Blanchard's photography studio, so I went back to the 1897 CD. I may have remembered wrongly, but I did notice a lot of page header adverts for the Garden City Foto Company at 606 E 5th Street. This is their main advert, showing how they get their unique 25-foot elevation (although they only claim 18 foot in the picture).

At first I thought the postcard company messed up it's colors, but then I noticed the blue cars. (if it was a misprint, they'd be brown too, right?)

...and i just noticed, the number 1746 is missing. (it's clearly visible in the top card)

So what's the make of that smaller blue car?

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the fact that there were 92 units! (60 with kitchens)

It just doesn't seem possible.

Here's HossC's 1986 aerial again.

Ok, now that I've compared the size of the bungalows to the neighboring houses, I see that they're rather large,
so perhaps 92 units is feasible.

(I have to laugh at myself, I was thinking perhaps 10 units...at max 20, if the bungalows were duplexes)

We've got some more mid-century architecture from Julius Shulman today. This is "Job 623: International Union of Operating Engineers, 1949".

I can't read the street sign in the first picture, but the 1956 CD led me to 2323 W 8th Street. The 2009 GSV images show the building as the Gu Sung Medical Clinic.

Sadly, the 2011 image shows an empty lot. Now you'll just find the wall of a playground, possibly connected with the MacArthur Park Primary Center at the northern end of the block.
