Thanks bighen. I wasn't aware of that.

Here is another intriguing location. This one has me completely baffled.

"5 x 8 negative, California, Los Angeles, La Fiesta, Coronation of Queen"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1890-99-5-X8...item25af24adaf

It seems odd that such an extravaganza was held mid-block in the middle of nondescript homes.

below:
In the center is a faux-palace façade built in front of a house for the La Fiesta Queen to make her grand entrance. (or should I say exit?)
(out the door....down the steps...her carriage awaits)

detail

below:
I'm not sure what's happening on the roof of the home at far right. It looks like a tent shelter of some sort has been constructed on the roof for viewing purposes.
(note the young lad leaning against the chimney in hopes of getting a better look)

I doubt there is enough information to ever figure out where this awesome photograph was taken.

Angeles Mesa School

I found this great photograph [c. 1917] earlier this week on eBay.

I believe the building in the photograph is too grand to be the children's school, so I'm guessing they're on a field trip. (notice how everyone's in their Sunday best) -quite cute.

Here's the reverse.

eBay

And by chance, I just happened across this postcard [c. 1913] showing "Angeles Mesa".

http://www.ebay.com/itm/B2775-1913-P...item51d9a65df0

I was hoping one of these building would be their school, but they all appear residential.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure where Angeles Mesa was located. I'll have to do some additional googling.

Attractive 'mystery' starlet.

I just happened across the following two photographs. The seller has no idea who the starlet is.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Holl...item2809bf5931

I have no idea who the gentleman is that's doing all the measuring.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Holl...item2809bf593e

I think this might be a pre-blonde Angie Dickinson. What do you guys think?

Anyone want look into it? Also, I was on here a few days ago, and I could've sworn someone posted a picture of a Catholic school that was once on the Plaza / Ranch Market at 4040 West Washington Blvd but I forgot to save it. Any help would be appreciated! Please and thanks!
Hi Danny,

Your first request regards the symbol in the upper left corner of this photo, over the entrance to the pot shop
at the SE corner of S. Main and E. 16th, correct?:

GSV Feb 2015

Perhaps that used to be a window. There were probably lots of other buildings that had the same or a
similar pattern, but the only one I can think of at the moment is the one we see at right in this 1906 photo
looking NE from the Foy House at the NW corner of 7th and Figueroa. I don't know if the shape had any
particular significance or if it is just an old-fashioned design:

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/re...coll65/id/1889

I'm not sure if that helps, and I'm sorry but I'm not sure what school building your other request refers to.

Yup, that's Angie. That's her costume for "The Bramble Bush"......The Bramble Bush is a 1960 American drama film directed by Daniel Petrie and starring Richard Burton, Angie Dickinson and Jack Carson. It was released by Warner Bros.

[The man may be Jack Poplin....Art Director for the film...? He also art directed under the name John S. Poplin.].

Wasn't the coronation usually held at Fiesta Park? I seem to recall quite a few posts re this (or maybe I read it somewhere else).
Those homes to the west across Hope St look pretty "nondescript":

We're heading up to Reseda today for our daily dose of Julius Shulman. This first shot was taken looking west on Sherman Way. I think we're just east of Etiwanda Avenue. In 1953 they were looking forward to their new Vons store. This is "Job 1465: Property views (Los Angeles, Calif.),1953".

I'm guessing that this shot was taken from roughly the same spot, this time facing north.

This Sav-on store is just visible in the background of the first image. It was on the north-east corner of Sherman Way and Canby Ave.

This close-up shows that Sally Shops ("The most talked about clothes in town") had a little scene in the shape on the right of their sign.

This shot was taken near the rear of the parking lot for the new stores. We're looking west towards Nestle Avenue.

Looking east from just inside the parking lot near Wyandotte Street.

Another look at the houses on Nestle Avenue, this time from the intersection of Wyandotte Street and Garden Grove Avenue.

All from Getty Research Institute

Look back to the first Shulman picture above. I think this might be the long building on the left. The apex of the side wall and the vent match up, but the upper front wall with the sign must have been added later.

GSV

Here's the old Sav-on store. A couple of years ago it was looking a bit rundown, but it looks like they've tidied it up now.

GSV

That strange shape (I'm going for irregular quadrilateral) is still on the front of the former Sally Shops building at 18411 Sherman Way. It's now the True Love Worship Center International.

GSV

For this last shot I tried to recreate the view from Wyandotte Street and Garden Grove Avenue. I think all the houses on Nestle Avenue (in the background) are survivors, but it's difficult to get a decent shot of more than one of them at a time.

This sounds like a noirish little place, especially with the "girlie" art.

911 Club, 911 S. Alvarado

eBay / matchbook

I wonder if Marie Nelson looked like that?

Just for fun, here's 911 S. Alvarado today.(there's a hardware store in the back)

gsv

detail

gsv

The old 911 Club building is next door to the Navarro Apartments with it's cool arched entrance. (there's a parking lot between them)

detail / gsv

I can imagine the Navarro residents walking over to the 911 Club for a beer.

gsv

We've seen the Navarro once before on NLA.

Here it is in 1914.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/500744052292119339/

It's hard to believe it's the same place.

According to 'Hollywood, 1900-1950, in Vintage Postcards' by Tommy Dangcil, it's Hollywood Boulevard at Highland Avenue.

Read all about it at:

http://immortalephemera.com/11914/al...icardo-cortez/

Here's Ricardo. Man about town in Hollywood and elsewhere.

immortalephemera.com

The manliness with which Cortez conducted himself throughout the affair with the late Alma Rubens earned him commendation in many quarters outside of Hollywood. Even before all of the facts of the case were known, this troubled young husband had the sympathy of his screen followers as much as the ill-starred wife did from those who knew her plight.

"Hollywood can be cruel to romance," Cortez said as we discussed the dark days of his life. "I've been given a lot of credit that I don't deserve."

I had all but forgotten Alma Rubens was married to Ricardo Cortez CBD.

I've been interested in Alma Rubens ever since I bought a copy of 'Hollywood Babylon' when I was in Junior High. I was mesmerized by this double-page photograph of Alma Rubens
with the caption "shortly before her death".

Hollywood Babylon / Kenneth Anger

At the time, I thought every story in Mr. Anger's book was true, only to find out decades later that almost every story was false, or at least embellished for sensational effect.

Funny you should run that particular photo of Jayne Mansfield. I worked a few nights at Chasen's parking cars and that is the view you got when J.M. got out of the car. Unforgetable to say the least.

Kenneth Anger's work was always ahead of its time and considered daring in its day.

Here are scenes from his 1965, 3 minute film: Kustom Kar Kommandos that was filmed in San Bernardino. It was done on a budget of $10,000 from the Ford Foundation. It starred actor Sandy Trent. I believe he died shortly after this was made.

It was fresh in its day but kinda tame by today's standards. Its on YouTube:>>>>>> 3 min.
