The Dartmouth skyline across from Halifax is in the process of changing dramatically. The current Dartmouth skyline is pretty limited, but SekishikiMeikaiHa recently posted a photo that shows the first almost completed phase of King's Wharf (two buildings -- one white building is visible next to the RBC building). Soon there will be four highrise buildings, which is a big change for Dartmouth, and so far they look surprisingly good.

Next year the developer plans to start on the 30 storey main tower. There will be on the order of a dozen new buildings in total, plus there is a development site across the street that might be developed as a highrise. Downtown Dartmouth might see its population just about double over the next few years (King's Wharf has about 1300 units).

Here's a picture of the King's Wharf model. Two buildings on the left are just about complete and two more are about the start. The 30 storey tower is not shown. The blocks at the bottom of the photo show the beginning of the existing downtown area which corresponds roughly to where the pyramid-shaped highrise (actually designed by Arthur Erickson) is in the skyline shot above.

The "iconic" tower. Not sure if this is a final design:

That 30 storey building is so sexy; I love how it stands abrupt right up against the water's edge. This seems to be something Halifax does well: first Purdy's Wharf, now this one. It's going to do wonders for the skyline.

It is going to have nice views. It will also play off of Halifax's skyline on the other side of the harbour, and it will definitely attract more attention than any building that Dartmouth has currently.

Another result of this, I think, will be more critical mass for downtown Dartmouth. In the last few years the neighbourhood has had some moderate success (actually a pretty good number of smaller condo buildings and conversions) but it's had the lingering chicken and egg problem caused by low density and a lack of local shops and services. With King's Wharf there will probably be a decent urban format grocery store and some other stuff and I think the neighbourhood will have a lot more appeal.

I should also point out that there's a plan underway for another industrial area adjacent to King's Wharf, so really we could see something like 5,000 new residents in the neighbourhood over a 10-15 year period.

I wonder why they left U Condos out of that drawing. They're already U/C and the taller of the two will be 184 metres.

I thought of that, but Casa II isn't approved yet, so it would be a bit premature.

You'd think they'd want to play up the height in the area though, given how tall 50 Bloor will be.

Probably because by "Yorkville of the future" they meant roughly ten years from now, and there's no guarantee U Condos will even be above ground by then.

U Condos started excavation, in the fall of 2010, they just started pouring the concrete foundation a couple months ago.

That must be some kind of record, if you exclude stalled, or stopped projects, which then restarted.

i love it. it reminds me of the original EAP renders. while that didnt work for calgary, it does loads for this skyline. i hope, no pray, that you guys get that tower and also the third sized world trade centers (the twins i have seen posted lately),as well. you guys deserve them all. good luck.

the amount of new buildings in that comparison is incredible. Toronto is really stepping it up.

Not including New York city, Toronto's second to none in U/C or proposed high-rises! (In NA) Chicago is starting to get a bunch of new proposals lined up but there a couples years out yet.
