Brief Description: Block 256 is where Macy's currently sits (for now). The department store closed officially on Feb. 17th. The building has been gutted out and is set to come down on Sept. 22nd.

After the building comes down, a tower will take its place. Renderings are not yet available, but here's a few things that we know so far:

• Believed to begin construction the end of this year or ealry next year
• 23-Stories, said to look like an elliptical prism
• Developer: Hines
• Park like area on the roof top floor
• Does not take up the entire block
• Retail included
• December 2015 completion date
• Tenant: Hilcorp Energy

The info comes from HAIF user DrLan34, below is a Swamplot article from June that confirms Hilcorp will build a tower on the site.

Anyone know the stone used for this facade of this store? I actually like this building, a lot. If you're going to build a structure with not a lot of windows, this is how you do it.

I usually sat quiet while most ridiculed this building. I agree that the structure actually grew on me a lot. The inside was hell though.

that makes me wonder, why are they tearing it down? couldnt they gut it and build a tower with the stone building as the base? i like the stone/glass combination of Heritage Plaza.

A couple of factors to consider...

Perhaps the foundation of the current structure would not be able to support any additional loads. In addition, shoring and strengthening existing foundations for additional loads can be expensive and very time consuming. Then factor in that the new structure has a signed tenant.

true. i sort of wish theyd recycle the stone and implement it somewhere into the new design. ah well, the "elliptical design" sounds interesting..

I am completely for historic preservation but that 1940s building was truly an eyesore. A huge windowless texture less brick bohemoth that always had homeless people sleeping in the door ways and hundreds of pigeons crapping everywhere.
