Aren't urban decay and Mexico City the same thing? Just kidding of course. Well, this is bad, but not shockingly bad for the worst neighborhoods of a developing nation's city.

Carlos Slim's Mexico City house is surprisingly modest. It's quite old and anonymous-looking.

He has other houses in the U.S. and Mexico though, including a $50 million mansion in NYC and a lakeside compound outside of Mexico City.

One thing that's odd about these pics is the garbage. These all look like "typical" slum areas of Mexico City, and I have been to lots of neighborhoods like this, but I don't recall the garbage everywhere.

Mexico City, regardless of neighborhood type, tends to be surprisingly clean. Folks don't litter too much.

Keep in mind that Mexico City is a fairly developed, higher-income city. It's the wealthiest city in Latin America, and a few city districts (roughly equivalent to NYC boroughs) have incomes approaching U.S./European standards.

But Mexico City also has terrible inequality, and vast slums, of course.

Maybe those trash piles were caused by the flooding a few years ago? There didnt seem to be any trash in areas that were on hillsides.

Love this pic: mountains surrounded by endless city, a couple of nice vehicles in front of crazy little houses on a strangely paved curved street.......

I love it.

Thanks.

I guess when its trash day in a place like this, the guys in their pickup truck who haul garbage just don't give a shit and dump it on a street corner? Also it could have been a bunch of bags that were torn into by scavengers or something.
