when someone makes an asinine argument, it is not rude to call out that argument for being asinine.

If I had said something personally about you, instead of attacking your argument itself, that would've been rude.

but to deny that atlanta is easily one of the most important cities in the south simply because it isn't at NYC's level is, in fact, asinine.

Lastly, as noted, Atlanta is not important, and no important entity needs external affirmation as to whether or not it is.
Yes, you did, lil’ mister liar you! I saw your first reply with my own two peepers. You were just quick on the draw to make the change, sir speedy!

Atlanta is very important, if for no other reason than simply because Matlock was set there. And if you don’t like Matlock, then I must say you are quite a loser.

Also, Atlanta has a Real Housewives, so it’s way more important than Moscow, Buenos Aires, or Toronto... which do not. And if you don’t like the Real Housewives, then you guessed it... big time loser!!

This is bit of a stupid comment and shows little insight whether you're an American or not.

Important HOW? many cities in the South are "important", others may be useless by comparison.

"Important" NOW doesn't mean it will maintain such a mantra or "claim".

My opinion ONLY:

ATLANTA = Important
Charlotte = Important
BIRMINGHAM = Not so much
Memphis = Useless
NASHVILLE = Very important
Miami = Very important
JACKSONVILLE = Important (very?)
Orlando = Important
TAMPA BAY = Very important (combo w/ORL)
Mobile = Useless
NEW ORLEANS = Not so much
Montgomery = Useless
HUNTSVILLE = Very important
Shreveport = Useless
LITTLE ROCK= Not so much

A city can be "most important" without being "important" (whatever that means).

Like, I'm the tallest person in my household. But I'm not very tall.

This is politics, but... Atlanta's "importance" skyrocketed last week after the special runoff election and the efforts of Stacey Abrams to affect black voter turnout. The Atlanta metropolitan area is almost single-handedly responsible for delivering victories for Ossoff and Warnock, and their Senate seats will carry extra (if only symbolic) weight for at least the next two years as the country tries to recover from some of its gravest wounds in history.

However, it’s not remotely important. NY and DC are.

In fact, its lack of significance prompted this whole thread. NY, DC, London, Paris, etc never ask if they’re important.

Lastly, while I like Atlanta, I think that Charleston and Savannah are vastly superior.
Ugm, Atlanta is not that cheap anymore. As the quality of amenities have gone up in that city, so have the prices.

Yep, metro atlanta finally got big and blue enough to overtake (however narrowly) georgia's deeply red rural vote.

It'll be interesting to see if it follows that path to become like a chicagoland (which utterly steamrolls illinois' deeply red rural vote), or if this was more of a temporary anti-trump protest vote from suburban atlantans.

I think the political shifts in Georgia and Arizona are aberrations, but I've been wrong a lot lately.

It's not. Just look at the suburbs around Atlanta. Cobb / Forsyth / Gwinnett used to be majority white by quite a large margin but that's not the case anymore. A lot of the younger white voters in those areas are also leaning towards the left. It's a demographic shift.

It's dirt cheap compared to NY and SF.

I'm with labtec, I don't think these are aberrations.

Arizona in particular. As cities get larger they tend to get more blue, and the Phoenix metro is right on the 50/50 line as one of the most conservative metros, so has considerable potential to go more blue. Ironically, in Arizona, the dominate metro has actually been keeping Arizona from going blue in the past, suggesting Arizona will go the way of NM and CO.

Yes, but so are most places. Atlanta is more on the expensive end of the spectrum these days than the affordable end. It's the 3rd most expensive non-coastal market among major cities, behind just Denver and Austin.

No, that could be Miami. (Higher MSA pop than Atl.)

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that if we draw an irregular circle-like shape linking Washington DC, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and back to DC, Atlanta is the main city in the circled area.

You have, and I think that is a good thing, haha!

But I agree with you up to a point--I don't expect either Arizona or Georgia to be consistently blue as we move forward, at least not for a long time--if there's a red wave election, for example, I would expect both to move in tandem with that wave.

Anyway, as to Atlanta specifically, I agree with the sentiment noted above that the 2020-1 election outcomes do increase my perception of Atlanta's regional importance. To me it indicates metro Atlanta has reached a critical mass that is unique in the South--its electorate is large enough that even when the sum of non-metro Georgia votes one way, metro Atlanta alone can tip the state total another way. That is not currently true of Houston, Dallas, or Miami.

it's very interesting to me how much bluer metro atlanta (+15.6) was this time compared to metro houston (+1.1) and metro dallas (+1.2).

if metro houston and metro dallas had broke for biden the way metro atlanta did, texas would've been a blue state as well, and then we could've seriously started throwing around "landslide" in terms of the EC.

of course, metro miami (+16.3) was roughly as blue as metro atlanta, but miami not only has to combat FL's ruby red rural areas, but also some of the reddest 1M+ metros in the nation in tampa bay (+2.6) and jacksonville (+13.0).
