I bet you the cost per square foot of this tower is among the highest for any residential building anywhere, ever. Macklowe paid huge costs to obtain the site, and construction prices skyrocket north of 700 ft. or so. Couple this with the fact this is a 100% union project in possibly the most expensive city anywhere to do construction, and I bet you it's sky-high.

You're right though that developers often try and cheap out if they think they can get away with it in the sales. It all depends on what the potential buyer is willing to pay.

As long as it stays white, I really like the bare concrete "cladding". it is brutalism combined with grace and it adds some variety to the Midtown's color palette.

One57 is 1004 ft tall or about 306m. This tower is right now 750 ft according to tubeworms article. Height of the floor is 15.5 feet appoximatly for a whole floor "unit". At 1 to 2 floors average rate, lets assume two floors per week

1004 - 750 = (15.5)2x

* so 8.19 weeks so around 8 weeks from now assuming 2 floors per week rise. May longer if 1 floor per week rises Due to (weather, accidents, ect.)

Hard to believe that this building will be the first to challenge the ESB's dominance in Midtown since the latter was first erected. This alone proves that a new era in New York skyline history is being formed, along with the rebirth of the WTC that brought height dominance back to Lower Manhattan.

Unlikely. At its fastest pace, they have built about 3 floors every 2 weeks, they've never built 2 floors per week (if on one week there were two jumps, then the next week just one)
And, I guess due to the weather, the pace has been slower, during almost two months this year, they only build five or six floors. I guess with the weather improving, they'll speed up, so I'd say it would be about 12-15 weeks to catch One 57.

The core is on apparent window level 50 or 775' The forms for the perimeter have been lifted to future apparent window level 48 or 744'

I've noticed (as I'm sure most of you have) that the 57'th street crane hasn't jumped in some time and doesn't seem to be keeping pace with these last few floors that have gone up. Does anyone think it will be coming down soon? I remember somebody saying that at around 900 ft they will dismantle it and rely solely on the crane rising next to the core. I'm also curious to know how high these cranes typically will rise on supertall buildings. It seems like a lot of mechanical stress on that one spot on the ground to have the weight of 750 + feet of steel added to the actual crane components. I'm not an engineer so maybe someone can enlighten me

If I remember correctly. The 57th street crane will rise till the building is 900' then come down. The cranes are both at or above 900' tall now. I think we will see the 57th crane jump soon.

I wish these Schmucks hadn't gone and re-invented the 70's. Talk about the most boring design to ever grace a building, especially one that will be the tallest tower in the country. Anybody like tick tack toe?

It will never be the tallest building in the country, not getting an obvious 70's-vibe, and "boring" is subjective (and often code for "I don't like international style architecture").

It will not even be the tallest in New York City, do some research before you start making statements.
