People are ALWAYS telling Houston about their problems... and we’re sick of it. (It’s a misquote, anyway.)

Those astronauts did a lot of complaining to Houston command, but folks might be interested to know that those conversations were edited (now available via 'Freedom of Information')... of interest to ssp were some deleted astronaut questions/complaints (they had great aerial views)... regarding the proliferation of parking lots surrounding Houston's skyscraper core. At least one (un-named) space-man was active on this forum.

A gazillion Hollywood movies and TV series were made in Toronto, with Toronto very rarely the actual setting but if you have a keen eye it's often easy to identify the city.

Stuff that actually has Toronto as the setting: the entire DeGrassi series, Chloé, Scott Pilgrim...

I'm guessing only interior shots for Moonstruck were filmed in Canada. Probably the family house scenes.

Because the street scenes are pretty obviously Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. I mean, the local stores/restaurants are often still around today. And there are pretty unmistakable scenes around Lincoln Center and Lower Manhattan.

What’s interesting is that there doesn’t seem to be a big population of indie movies about or set in Toronto. Or maybe these don’t make it over the border ?

Austin:
Richard linklater movies

Chicago:
John Hughes movies

John cusak movies

Atom Egoyan has made some pretty good movies with Toronto as the setting.

Many Cronenberg films are assumed to be in Toronto but have a generic North American city feel.

One of them even opens with something like "North America 1986".

Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Michael Cera, Brie Larson)
Take This Waltz (Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams)
Enemy (directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Jake Gyllenhaal)
The F Word (alternate title What If; Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Driver)

A few more listed here:https://www.designlinesmagazine.com/toronto-on-film/

Plus lots more that most people have never heard of:

Born in North Dakota, cut his teeth touring the Dakotas and Minnesota, hit the big time in Minneapolis. Somehow this evolved into Mexican gangster music:

Then there was this:

And this:

Minneapolis is a music city first and foremost.

Love the shot of the audience at the end of that Lawrence Welk clip... looks about right. Good point about the music - it sent me googling. Apparently there was a "German Belt" in southern Texas during the 1830's - 1840's, and that influence spilled over into northern Mexico. I had no idea!

I guess Minneapolis gets credit for Lizzo, though she was born in Detroit (and raised in Houston). But Prince - all the way!

Minneapolis was where she made a lot of her music and became a star. That video is from that period and was shot in the city. She was a fixture in the local music scene here until the demands of stardom pulled her away. I would consider her more of a Minnesota musician than Bob Dylan who was born and raised here but left as soon as he could and made his name in NYC.

Vancouver, besides an assortment of famous actors and musicians, doesn't have too many identifiable cultural icons. The birthplace of Greenpeace is probably the biggest. Ummmm, Cheech and Chong started here.

After several novels set in Toronto, Henry Fitzroy, the vampire hero of the "Blood" novels by Tanya Huff, relocated to Vancouver after turning former police detective Vickie Nelson into a vampire to save her life. After the move to Vancouver, Henry's protege and lover, Tony Foster, discovered he was a wizard and went on to star in a few novels of his own.

Meanwhile, Greenville warranted a brief mention in a Rita Mae Brown novel, in which a character mentions her sister lives here and loves it.

So that's what they look like. I've heard of them but never seen one.
