This spring we've had very, very little fog - which is typically our default spring weather for weeks on end.

Went for a run this morning in the rain - but it quickly cleared away and it's become a beautiful day.

Looks like the Americans beat us at North America's oldest continuous sports event while they were here.

The Regatta is cancelled this year due to COVID-19. One of the very few times in two centuries, except for a major disaster or the coronation of a monarch.

And the sun REALLY came out when I got through the picturesque neighbourhoods of Quidi Vidi, Bannerman, and Georgestown... and back to my own neighbourhood, Rabbittown lol

Is snowstorm like that a regular occurence? To photograph with heavy snow on the ground and in the air is very impressive. No matter amount of the snow, the colourfulness of the rows of houses is unmistakable. Actually, the colours seem to stand out even more during winter.

I really like the coastline and those cliffs and rocks along the water too. I'm not sure I've seen anything like that in person. It makes me think I need to spend more time visiting the lakes here, especially in Canadian Shield, or maybe even visit Newfoundland one day.

To that degree, no. It's the first that bad I've experienced. We were completely shut down here, not so much as a corner store open for days, and almost everything shut down for two weeks. It was, in hindsight, EXCELLENT prep for the COVID-19 lockdown, though. Covid is nothing compared to that storm. SO many more things (groceries, for example, gas stations) were able to operate during the Covid lockdown.

But that said, a good blizzard with a couple feet of snow here can happen every year.

Yesterday...

It's already summer here. The fog is even staying just offshore like it does in July/August.

And today...

It is So. Fucking. Hot. And the stench of weed coming out of Bannerman Park, I wish you could smell this lol

We went for a bike ride on the Trailway (former Newfoundland Railway) from downtown St. John's to near the edge of Mount Pearl and Paradise. As it's a former railbed, it's almost all slightly uphill from downtown... but coming back? Tens of kilometres and you don't even need to pedal lol. Fucking BEAUTIFUL. I usually hike, and never go the Trailway because there's so many long, straight stretches. Might as well walk around mile farm roads out west, just kill me lol. But by bike, those stretches are more stimulating. It was REALLY enjoyable. Especially how out of shape we are in terms of being completely wiped out by kilometre after kilometre of a slight incline lol

St. John's...

There was a rainshower as we got into Mount Pearl. It was very, very welcome lol

Mount Pearl...

Nice pictures! I love the nature pictures from the updates this month. That water along the rugged coastline looks amazing!

We're at the end of a cold snap. Brutal - around 10C (50F) for several days.

sometimes we're bound for Spain

can't ye dance a polka?

Nice pictures again!

I heard that Newfoundland is cut off from the world, with no one allowed to go to or from the island. Is that correct?

I have been seeing Newfoundland stuff around here in Delaware, for some reason. People have the Newfoundland flag as the front license plates on their cars. There's a house I drive past on the way to my parents' house that flies the Newfoundland flag.

Our diaspora is enormous - has to be millions strong at this point. It's mostly concentrated in Canada and the United States but honestly it's hard to find an English-speaking city that doesn't have at least a small Newfoundland community. We're over-represented in certain industries as well, depending on the region (for example, in Canadian media, in American comedy writing, in American steel, in oil and gas worldwide, etc.).

The travel rules here are a bit complicated.

We're in a mutual travel bubble with the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island). So anyone from those three Canadian provinces can come to Newfoundland for any reason, without having to quarantine.

Anyone from anywhere else in Canada, or the world, has to apply for permission to come. It needs to be essential travel, approved in advance by the Chief Medical Officer of Health. Those people are required to self-isolate for 14 days once they arrive here. That basically eliminates tourists, who would be using their whole vacation cooped up in their bedroom - so most of these people getting approved are returning home here or moving here.

There are a few more complicated types of people - temporary foreign workers (Canada's version of agricultural migrant workers in the States). Their employer is required to isolate them for 14 days somewhere on the Canadian mainland. Only after that are they allowed to come to Newfoundland. (This isn't as much us being strict as it sounds - Canada is only allowing international flights to land at four airports, not including St. John's, and these workers are required by us to isolate where they land).

Then there are essential workers - say, journeypersons with rare expertise, or some sort of healthcare specialist - these people are allowed to enter, allowed to work immediately, but most self-isolate at home when not at work.

Nice pictures!

Does Newfoundland have a specialty food? For instance, poutine is a Quebec food (that has spread). Or, brisket is a Texas type of barbecue, whereas pork is a North Carolina type of barbecue.

By the way, this is a house on North Star Road near Newark, Delaware, that I drive past to go to my parents' house.
