What is the building under construction, the one with the crane where 100 Congress, San Jacinto Tower, and One Congress Plaza are supposed to be. The pic of 1985'. That so not to be confused with Four Seasons Residences, which is currently under construction in that area.

That is the William P. Hobby Building. It's a state office building. There's actually two towers on that block that face away from each other.

A huge thunderstorm rolled through Austin last night. It brought an inch of rain, golf ball sized hail, 60 to 70 mph winds and two confirmed tornadoes to the Austin metro area.

Saw this on Fox7, and had hoped I would find them.

Some photos of a thunderstorm from about a week ago. These were taken from Spring (a condo tower).

I remember that storm. There was tons of that static like lightning all across the sky that night.

Great pictures! I love Austin- I'm hoping to move there some day. I just have to prepare myself for some intense heat.

My first post, but I found this on Flickr and it made me think of this forums. I didn't know if I should put it in the normal Austin thread/forum or on this "Found Pictures" thread so I am just going to stick it here.

Hope I posted according to the posting rules. I just found the picture just so very 'Austin' it had to be posted somewhere. =)

Edit: That photo really makes me think of how much that city view has changed just in the few years that I have been going to ACL Fest.

I was trying to find a picture of ACL and Austin from the original 2002 show what I call the 'Original Austin Skyline' before even the Frost building (The year I got out of the Navy and moved back home to Austin) and I think this is from that show.

^It's not light rail. Meaning, it doesn't use an electric train like Dallas and Houston use. The train in that photo is diesel powered "heavy rail". It's really no different than a freight train, and in fact, it does use freight train tracks. Light rail trains can make very tight turns pretty much as easily as a bus can, and can make more frequent stops, say from block to block. Heavy rail, as this train is, can not make tight turns. Its turns are only as tight a radius as a freight train is. They also cannot make frequent stops. As anyone knows, freight trains take forever to slow down and stop. This train runs from downtown into East Austin, and then crosses under I-35 again north of UT and cuts through North Austin into Leander and back again.

Not really. I don't remember the number, but it's pathetic. The really dumb thing is it doesn't run on the weekend. That would be fine if Austin's downtown and core were dead after hours, but it's not. Take this weekend for instance. There are 75,000 people at Zilker Park for ACL Fest. Are the trains running? Nope. Is there any place to park? Nope.

I was looking at the line in google Earth and it seems quite strange, there are hardly any stops in residential areas and it looks like you have to drive your car to wherever there is a stop for it. Seems like they didnt plan that out too well. Id like to ride it sometime though.

From http://allsystemsgo.capmetro.org/cap...orail-qa.shtml
Why does Capital MetroRail not run at night or on weekends?
MetroRail is a starter line that will initially provide service for weekday commuters. Capital Metro’s rail line is also used to ship freight from Llano to Giddings during the mid-day, overnight and on weekends. Per federal regulations, Capital MetroRail can not travel on the tracks at the same time as freight trains. However, Capital Metro’s long term plan includes offering more service during the week, weekends and potentially for special events. Before MetroRail service can be expanded, the agency must make changes to freight service and increase the system infrastructure, such as building more track and buying more vehicles.

Great pics, diskojoe. I really like the 2nd one. I'm guessing that was taken from along 183 somewhere.

It really cuts through North Austin in such a way that doesn't make it all that convenient to get to on foot. Being that it was a freight line, it sort of slices through the city and doesn't really interact with it. It's a freight line, so it behaves like a highway basically. One neat thing about it, is it follows the same route of the trains they used to build the Capitol. There are actually still large pieces of granite laying along the tracks that had fallen off the trains. They never bothered to pick them up, so they're still there. The granite from the Capitol was quarried from a spot near Marble Falls, Texas. That quarry is actually still in use. Pretty much all of the granite, and limestone, too, in Austin and San Antonio's skyscrapers comes out of the Hill Country. People beat up on San Antonio for having a "brown stone skyline" whatever that means, but it simply makes sense to use local material.

Hello Kevin,

Here is a very interesting image I found over at Fotocommunity.
There are a lot of people who think this building looks like an owl.
I guess it would if you imagine it hard enough.
A beautiful capture nonetheless, no?

My kitty just noticed, too, and took off running! He thinks it's a Great Horned Owl (well, not really, but yes I see it).

Austin's changing skyline as seen from the ACL festival from '04-'10. Pretty amazing the changes...
