well the ones south of Tiananmen have been remade into the Old Chinese City from the Qing era. They removed many of the brick add-ons from the 20tyh century that disfigured the area, and used old photographs to reconstruct the rest. Problem is they bought out most of the residents in doing so and replaced them with commercial businesses. Ahhh capitalism...:

I do remember seeing a sign near Tiananmen Square with those renders, Im glad they restored it but Im sure its very expensive to live in that area now so its not at all the same. Gentrification, China style.

yep all those local inhabitants, some of them with family businesses dating for centuries are all gone. Also the famed streetlife has been replaced by mas consumerism. It's pretty but it's not authentic

Wow, how hasn't National Geographic offered to put any one of these photos on their cover for the next issue? I've seen your stuff from Arkansas and other U.S. stuff but none of that comes close to touching the amount of quality and pure class in this thread. I thought you had a talent with the camera before, but you most certainly outdid yourself.

This looks like an amazing look into the life in Modern China. It's threads like these that entice me into wanting to visit the Far East. Thank-you very much! I had no idea the Great Wall was in such a crumbling state. I love the contrast between the modern highways, the falling apart hutongs, the modern and endless apartment rises, and the poor rural side. This should be called "Fair and Balanced China" for sharing all sorts of sides to the country. THanks again!

God damn am I ever glad you found these (I'm always terrified of losing photos).

That would be truly tragic, but now we can look forward to several more threads of your travels. Needless to say, I'm stoked to see them.

Im actively making my Arkansas book, I have to wait a couple months to finish it though because I need more pictures from the eastern half of the state to make the book a true picture of what Arkansas is.

I never got around to thanking everyone for the incredibly kind comments. My last few threads havent been up to the quality of the photos in this thread. I got kinda lazy, but I have a new Houston thread coming that I hope will match this thread soon. My passion has always been photography and I really hope someday I can make a living from it, the kind words for you guys on here have really made me think I possibly could make a living from it. I just will have to meet the right people.

That's a wonderful journey in Beijing. I should say there are still many nice places in China. I recommend you to go Changbai mountain in Jilin province. That is a fairyland, you can see waterfalls, hot springs, canyons, underground forest, lava forest, alpine garden, underground rivers, forests, clouds, snow and ice.
When you go, don't forget to take pictures to share with us.

Amazing quality! You've really captured the essence of China, both good and bad, in one set of photos.
