Seemingly out of nowhere, the Browns on Portage looks to be nearing completion.

Also, a ton of work has been going on under the Snap at Portage/Hargrave. A restaurant is going in on the Hargrave side (where you used to enter 4Play), still haven't heard anything about it yet.

That's exciting news -- what's the timeline for them opening (and who's involved?)

Blind Tiger is closing and being converted to a second Hermano's location (same owners).

Also, the team behind The Roost are opening a prix-fix restaurant and lounge called Oxbow where Sawatdee Thai was.

Oh that's exciting - noticed that part of Begonia/Sawadtee Thai was completely under construction this spring - wondered what was going on. Also figured Blind Tiger must have abandoned their speak-easy theme when they re-opened up all the windows

Yeah... as soon as you show off your "secret" speakeasy on the news, it kind of defeats the purpose. Especially when you do it in your first week being open.

Literally the worst name for a restaurant I've ever heard. Sounds like something off the Simpsons. Arrrrrr.

The menu looks interesting for a fast-casual place, I'll give them that.

I ate at a place like that in Mesa this past winter. It was one of the best meals I've had.

^^ I haven't seen any confirmed plans that Popeye's has any plans to open even a single location in Winnipeg.

"Winnipeg is definitely on our radar," said Rob Manuel, the New Orleans-based company's regional leader for Canada.

"In an ideal scenario, we would have stores open there in 2016, depending on the availability of franchisees. It could slip into 2017."

^^ So basically Popeye's is hoping someone else takes on all the risk of running their brand in Winnipeg. Yeah I can see what it's taking a while.

That's how Tim Hortons started here... back in the 90s when a Tim's location was not a sure thing, franchisees took on considerable risk. It ended up working out for them.

Very few of the chains come in as company stores as that puts their money at risk.

Some chains will sell you one location at a time and others will sell a territory (i.e all of Winnipeg /Manitoba or part of Winnipeg / Manitoba) and you can either open up locations on your own or sub-franchise in your territory.

Don't think this has been brought up before, Za Pizza is opening a location on Regent later this summer by the Orthodontists and Five Guys. Will be nice to have something like this closer to home! They are also apparently opening a location on Main street by Kildonan Park this summer as well. Definitely moving fast on expanding through the city.
