Most but not all old corporate media report what it wants when it wants. Dependent on the narrative. The only way I would ride the crime train is if I was allowed to carry my side arms. Our self-defense laws for personal injury and property need to be rewritten to protect Canadian citizens from bodily harm. The police these days are not much of a deterrent to these criminals thanks to lack of prosecution and prosecutors not following the laws of the land..

I'll ride the LRT during hockey games or other events or during busy times when lots of riders are on the train. Early morning or late at night? No chance.

How many of those suspects have committed multiple assaults or property crimes? It's going to take a long, long time to change any of this. You have to have a constant police/security presence to deter this. How many city councilors or the mayor (or off duty cops) ride the trains regularly?

Until then I'll drive and/or stay in my "safe" neighborhood. Sad reality.

My first time taking the LRT was a year ago after moving downtown from the Lower mainland. Was just minding my own business at the Corona station and heard a guy screaming, thought nothing of it.

Turns out he was yelling at me and thought I was "looking" at him. Walks up to me and raises his hands as if he wanted to fight and I just pushed him away. Then comes along another homeless guy who pulls out a knife and tells him to fuck off. The original aggressor then just straight up punches my "defender" in the face as security comes. Ended up seeing him get arrested at Churchill station afterwards but man was that an interesting experience.

I wouldn't say the LRT is unsafe, I use it very frequently and yea there's homeless people but for the most part they are harmless. I don't really go up towards the north so unsure how it is up there, assume it's much worse.

Was around 500 violent incidents in transit stations last year which doesn't sound like too many honestly. Isn't the Edmonton LRT also one of the most used transit systems in North America?

During the day most transit systems are fine. It's the early morning or late evening that can sometimes be sketchy...and that's most transit system to be honest. And yes there's a difference on which line you're on. The NE line has always been more dicey.

If you take those incidents, divide it by the number of transit stations there are along with the number of riders it's not that bad. Reality is that more police/security presence is necessary in some locations. No different then street patrols.

The City is doing a survey (another survey ) on public preferences for three different seating layouts for 53 new LRT cars (37 replacement and 16 for additional capacity).

Before you get to provide any input or feedback, they want to know how many times you've used the system in the last 3 months and how many times you plan to use it in the next three months.

Apparently they're happy with current ridership on the system because if you answer none, you get the following message:

At this time we are looking to hear from those who use Edmonton transit or plan to use Edmonton transit in the near future. We look forward to your participation in future surveys."

You'd think feedback from those that don't currently use the system in regard to what they would find attractive in potentially using it might be of interest but you'd be wrong.

I get the importance of feedback from your current users but by using the same questions to eliminate feedback from others they could just as easily isolate feedback from non-users and maybe find out why.

"Based on research from Oxford University using 80 years of data from around the world, only two rail projects out of every 1,000 were delivered on time, on budget, and with the expected benefits."

I got this one in my Email the other day....The questions they ask before you can fill out most surveys are ridiculous. I've unsubscribed from them all now.

There are still a lot of professionals and students taking the LRT. The City of Edmonton can certainly do something to improve the perception of safety but without support from the provincial government and, seeing how it is clearly a Canada wide issue now, the federal government, their efforts are only diverting the issues to another place or deferring it to another time. I can see on my daily transit commutes that we are failing all the vulnerable communities.
