I'm disappointed, as an anglophone, that the first mayor from the anglophone community in over 100 years was arrested and accused of fraud, among other things.
Applebaum never struck me as the corruption fighter he pretended to be. I was a little suspicious of his intentions at the beginning. He couldn't win the confidence of his Union Montréal colleagues in the party's vote, so he decided to present himself to city council as an "independent" candidate who was by-partisan. I had read various things relating to his position as borough mayor on the interesting
Coolopolis blog. He never struck me as a "nice" person, kind of in the same way that Gilles Vaillancourt isn't exactly a very nice guy. Both do seem to get what they want though.
Having said that, I still believe Gérald Tremblay to be innocent. Tremblay struck me as being more naive and completely out of the loop as opposed to corrupt. Tremblay also did do a lot of good things while mayor, despite the circus going on around him.
Next election, I will probably root for Bergeron. He may be a bit out there on a lot of issues (particularly his belief that 9/11 was an inside job), but I am absolutely positive that he is not corrupt.
