Province to replace Ontario Municipal Board with less powerful tribunal

Ontario is planning to scrap the independent tribunal that adjudicates planning and development disputes and set up a new one that will give municipalities more power.

I liked the OMB because it ensured cities like London couldn't be entirely ruled by NIMBY activists. My old neighbourhood would never have gotten a Tim Hortons if it wasn't for the OMB.

It was far from a perfect system but NIMBY activists have to be kept in check to ensure projects that are good for the greater community don't get derailed by vocal individuals.

I think a lot of people will be happy about the move here in Ottawa though.

In Ottawa the OMB has been a major headache because when the city actually does try and enforce height restrictions on new buildings (especially apartment high-rises or condos) or follow local development plans, the OMB will usually side with the developer and overrule the city.

This is proof that the Liberals are basically saying "to hell with our donors, we want votes". Will voters realize what this is before we go to the polls, though? I'm not sure.
