Hopefully, aerial vids are OK here. Here's a YouTube vid I found of a flight into Houston, showing the medical center skyline. The best part starts at about 2:28. Video taken by SteubiePilot.

^Looks like many of Calgary's tallest buildings are arranged in a linear fashion; Am I seeing that right?

That's Pittsburgh for ya. THE underdog city. It gets the same response from every person who visits it. They say, "Wow".

Two amazing aerials of half of central Shanghai. The fact that the Xujiahui, Hong Qiao, Minhang, Changning and Pudong (except for a silver of Lujiazui) districts are missing in these pictures goes to show what a beast Shanghai is. Easily the clearest shots I've ever seen of SH from a plane.

These shots are very recent. They look to be from December 2012.

First, a photo taken from the parking garage of an apartment building being built in South Austin, and the 2nd is an aerial photo showing it at the bottom of the photo. The property sits atop a hill and will have one of the best views of downtown in the city. I cannot wait to see it next spring when it's finished.

To anyone who has flown over these cities, maybe you could help me; After seeing the above photos of Shanghai and it's massive urban skyscraper sprawl, I wonder which is more impressive to see flying over in a plane and landing/taking off; Is it Shanghai or perhaps Hong Kong the Chinese mega skylines; Or is is New York with most of it's highrises neatly lining Manhattan Island?
Or perhaps, the scale of Sao Paolo's highrise forest?

I'm really only interested in comparing those massive cities mentioned.

Here is Sacramento from the international space station

One of the most weird building patterns you will find for a city/metro

I can't help but think cities like Shanghai are going to be miserable places in about 50 years. For one thing, all those concrete housing blocks had better be perfectly maintained so they don't look like their American counterparts from the 50s and 60s, because there are a lot of them.

The bigger issue would be if the Chinese middle class follows the same pattern as most western countries and decamps for the suburbs. They are building in such an out-of-scale way that the only thing keeping Chinese cities from being completely overbearing and soulless is that there's enough pedestrian traffic and street level activity. If the inner cities were to depopulate at all, they would probably be extremely depressing.
